All GT cars, 911 or current 718 (or previous 981 GT4/Spyder) had tall gearing. This isn't anything new. The main reason why people choose to nitpick this on the 718 GTS 4.0, GT4 and Spyder is that the engine really doesn't sound alive until you are past 5k RPM. That was not case before with any of the 911 GT3/RS engines, including the mezger engines. The previous 3.8 in the 981 GT4/Spyder sounded great minus the stupid torque dip but the tall gearing was slightly ignored because the engine sounded good through the RPM. Well, okay people still whined about the tall gearing in the 981 but it usually is drowned out by the engine sounds great crowd.

Changing the exhaust out on the 718 GT4/Spyder or the GTS 4.0 will help with this. You will hear the car better and not be forced to rev past 5k to hear the engine.

That or just DeMan the car.

I have a CGTS 4.0 and recently test drove a 991.2 GTS and a 992 S both manual

as soon as I got back into my car, I was like nah, NA for me all the way, can't beat the connection and emotion that comes with a naturally aspirated flat six porsche and yeah the six speed is noticeably better (the 992 7 speed is also noticeably better than the 991.2 7 speed)

and you have one of the most amazing flat sixes out there in your GT3, I did read recently the dude on carmdudgeon who has a GT3 say that due to his feelings of mechanical sympathy, he does not like to rev his GT3 over 7000 rpm as it doesn't sound and feel too happy at those revs

never heard that before about the GT3, do you feel that way?

lol no way. i revved my 458 and gt3 out to 9k all the time. its designed to do it. the issue is finding space to do it. i also added a sharkwerks exhaust which brings more sound in from 3.5-7k, so i dont feel the NEED to rev out that high as much.

in everyone being so wrapped with silly lap times and statistics, it’s crazy to me how it was forgotten that the Boxster was based on the 911. Was pretty common knowledge when the Boxster first came out even.

Out of curiosity, what do you do for work?

Your vehicle history (progression) is fascinating!
P.S. how did you like the 458?

Appreciate the video, since the wife just greenlighted me for a Porsche.

Replacing the Fiata, I'm between a 911 Carrera Cab (S or 4S) and the Boxster S. Unfortunately though, price range has me looking at a 997.1, which I'd be constantly concerned about bore scoring/IMS...so I'm more likely going to choose a 13-16 Boxster with the flat 6. We'll see, been searching for a couple weeks now. Anyone remember when manuals were cheaper?

A manual is gonna cost you 15 to 20% more yeah.

If you don't need the back seats then yeah Boxster is good, but if you have kids i'd stretch for a 997.2 base. It has the 3.6 litre engine that has proven to be damn near bullet proof.

My 2c, the boxster and Cayman never look right at the rear, that's just me though.

Unless you perpetually have 2-year olds...I can't understand this argument for the 911 "rear seat". In a world of coupes with small rear seats...the 911 is basically a shelf to set some grocery bags. Apart from real young children, it's not practical, meaning you're still limited by when those kids start growing past hobbit-size.

Porsche tunes the 911 chassis higher, that's the reason to get it.

I had a Mini vert before the Fiata - with about the same usable back seat as the 911. Only lure for me on this, is that it's easier to throw your laptop back in the back seat vs tossing it in the trunk.

But this is no means a deal breaker for me. I will state that the Fiat has absolutely nowhere to even put a wallet and cellphone. So even a door pocket is an improvement on space.

Think I'd need the improved engine for the 911, so I'd need to look 997.2 or better. Most that I've seen have taken me out of my price range. Would like to keep this 65k or less.

This just isn't true though.

My kids are now 12 and 8, 8 year old sits behind me, 12 yr old behind the wife. getting a bit tight as of this yr as my 12 yr old is about 5ft 5 but let's say we draw the line there, it's hardly hobbit sized.

last year we went out as a family maybe a dozen times through the local escarpment, picnic and a hike thrown in.

How tall is the wife? How much room is back there - this seems like a reasonable amount of room.

Wife is 5ft 6. Is it super comfy? No. But there's quite a bit of leg room in the front so she can really push her seat a ways forward and the 12 yr old slots in behind. Do note it is a cab, when go top up it feels MUCH tighter, i know this sounds crazy but it makes a big difference. me goes for getting in and out, WAY easier top down.

I would assume a coupe would be a little roomier with the backseat because of the way the top is shaped? But I understand.

And thank you for that, I've always been curious about people's real life experiences.

This may give you a better idea, I was trialing booster seats so yeah a bit of an eyesore but in this image the seats are set for my wife and I, though my mrs can go forward a touch more. It's "tight but doable" (that's what she said).

Ha! Wifey did the same since she never drives her car (WFH) and takes one of mine if she meeds to go somewhere. I'm after a 981 Cayman S, tho.

Pricing is always a funky thing (options, base vs S, mileage, # of owners, etc...)...so much subjectivity. From what I've seen, manuals are around 3k-7k more. I might break down and go PDK since, if I'm working on the X1 the wife would have no car. She's open to learning manual and did alright when I walked her thru on my ZHP a long time ago, tho. Then she'd be able to drive my Moupe which would be no bueno.

Like yourself, 997.1 is in the ballpark I'm willing to part with but a 997.2 is the one I'd bite on. I've seen some .2 cabriolets and targas in the right range but I'm more of a Coupe person.

I keep running into aome 981 CS examples that are close to what I want but then they turn out to have Yachting Blue interior.

I get what you're saying. Aft is not it's best viewpoint. Even 911's are a bit daft w/o a whale tail to break up the long slope, though (IMHO).
