I gave up, Had to ask Google , according to one of my grandchildren , Google knows everything. On this occasion took a little digging but found the answer, good luck to all, tick tock to time to celebrate 4/20 style in a little while.

My car is white, and here's why:

If my car was black, Jane and Max would've figured out their color by now. Jane sees my black car and Max's white car, and thinks "If my car was black, Max would've seen two black cars and deducted his car is white; but that didn't happen, so my car has to be white!" Then Jane would've won. Max is thinking the same thing Jane is, and Max could've won also.

BUT 20 minutes went by and none of them said anything, so my car has to be white.

You are correct! Most people who answer their car is BLACK are using their Statistical/Probability side of their brain.

It can be easy to assume that your car is BLACK when thinking that you started the game with seeing 5 cars where 3 are WHITE and 2 are BLACK. Two cars are removed but during the game you see 2 WHITE cars still in the room so the only remaining options for your car's color are two black cars and one white car.

That will have you thinking chances are 2 out of 3 my car is BLACK and 1 out of 3 my car is WHITE. It is more likely my car is BLACK. This is a decent guess based on statistics of the number of black cars and white cars that you don't see in front of you but it is wrong!

That is the trick with this riddle - unlike many other riddles. Here you have to use the logic side of your brain and you must grasp the point of view of the other players.

Because YOU see two white cars YOU KNOW everyone in the game is seeing at least one white car. If your car was black then Jane or Max would see one white car and one black car and would have made a guess already.
They don't say anything for 20 minutes which makes you realize all cars have to be WHITE.

If anyone looked out and saw two black cars, they would instantly know theirs is white, answer as such, and win the game.

if i see a black and a white car:
i already know that 2 whites were not taken away.
i know that 2 black cars were not taken away because i see one.
thus 1 black and 1 white were taken away.
since one of each was taken away one black and two white remain and i see the two white cars so i would have to be in the black car......but in this scenario the two others see me in my black car and someone in a white car so they would know they are in a white car and the game is over.....thus if i see a white and a black i must be in white.

if i see two white cars:
i know i can not be in a black car because the logic above would apply to whomever can see a black (mine) and a white car, thus i must be on a white car

this makes sense to me - does it to anyone else??

Answer below (highlight to see better):
Prisoner 1 sees a black and a white hat, so he cannot know for sure what color his hat is. Prisoner 2 knows that 1 must see two different color hats, because if he saw two of the same color he would have guessed his own hat color already. prisoner 2 sees the 3's hat is white, and know's his hat must be a different color from 3's so Prisoner 2 correctly guesses that his hat is black

Question on this line: How are either Max or Jane able to make a guess if they see one black and one white car? What would they guess?

Only three white cars give the players equal opportunities (making it a gamble by the way).

Two black - two players are doomed to lose.

One black - one player is doomed to lose.

(A black is a doomed loser every time. Why so? )

"After 20 minutes of silence you are amazed you didn't guess your color sooner." - If you did you'd likely lose. It's assumptions over logic (effectively guessing) game actually.

It can be only one actually: "If anyone guesses wrong then that player has to buy a car each for the other two players". If you see two black cars you don't have to speak at all unless you mind losing a friend (or two).

If I am in a black car, then Jane will know she can't be in a black car because Max would see us in two black cars and guess correctly and the game would be over. But Jane doesn't know she is in a white car, otherwise she would guess so and the game would be over. Therefor I am in a white car.

The only problem with all this logic is you're assuming the other two share it. With a 50/50 shot, I can see the game ending within the first minute depending on participants.
