When I was in my early 20's, my father built his house acting as the general contractor. He was a perfectionist, and fired the masons after only two courses of foundation cinderblocks because they weren't level enough in his eyes. Lets just say that I and the rest of our family had a crash course in mason school to get it finished over a weekend, because the framers were showing up on Monday morning.

Now that I'm at your grandfather's age (and in not-so-great health), I still plan to build our retirement Garage Mahal down south at the tree farm. I did learn one lesson from my old man, though...build on a poured concrete slab!!!!!

A horse farm, it's my wife's and my dream but unfortunately we haven't been able to make it happen yet. We board her horses now and we really wish it was the other way around but the property prices are out of control for horse farms.

ps I'm certain I've posted this before but with my memory fading I never know for sure.
She’s looking pretty cute there!!

I just want to reiterate! You need to get an E39 ///M5!!! Within the next six months I want to see a post with photos of you standing next to and sitting in your new ///M5. I see amazing examples of them virtually every day on Instagram!! Go find one for yourself!!!

You present a compelling argument. You made me look. My moment of lust has passed. Here's why:

While the example I saw on the road that led me to start this thread was incredible, it just isn't for me at this point in my life. Don't get me wrong, it's an amazing car. I think I've driven three of four of them back in the day. They do put a smile on my face. But, I'm not now and never have been a fast driver.

As I think I mentioned in my OP, I've got a lot of experience with E39s, having owned two E39 540s from 1997 ('98 model) to4 2012. My second E39 was the perfect car for how I drive. It was the 540 m-sport (or m-tech depending on who you ask. My 2003 m-sport had 3:15 differential, it was lowered, it had m suspension and m-style front and back bumpers, all stock from the factory. It was plenty fast with the stock 540 engine with that awesome 3:15 differential and was a completely different driving experience than my 1998 540. Unfortunately, my wife and I were in a car wreck in that car and it was demolished. It saved our life, but it paid the price. .

So, an E39 M5, while tempting, is not going in my garage. If I was going back to the old days, I'd get the best example of the E39 540 with m-sport package like the one I had. All the looks, all the suspension, none of the extra HP I will never use and an AT that suit me at my advanced age.

I suspect it would be easier to find an E39 M5 than a E39 540i M Tech; the latter were pretty rare, weren't they? But you've hit on the one big difference: No AT available in the M5.

Keep saving - a recession should come soon enough and you'll have your opportunity.

I think you are correct. There were only about 1,500 E39 540 M Tech cars made. I was lucky enough to have one for 6 year.

Here's a pic of mine in my garage next to my other E39 540 that I sold to my son.

The second pic is my 2003 E39 540 M Tech out at the beach. I loved that car. RIP

Stop it. Just stop it!!

I love those cars and you posting them isn't helping my desire to slack off and go on autotrader to see what's available. I can't do it...I can't afford it...stop making me drool!

In my 20s, I lusted after women and cars. In my 30's, it was property and money. Today in my 40's, I just want some good 420 and inner peace.

Have not commented in this thread because I don’t really lust for anything that I don’t have, but want. Still lust for my wife, but I have her, and will have her again. 😊

Would like cooler summers here. Could use a hot tub for my old arthritic back (plan on getting one, sooner rather than later). Pretty happy the way things are… except for the back issue.

Now that that E39 M5 vision is several days past, I'm back to my senses. I'm with you; I have all the things that are important to me. I feel lucky every single day.
