Agree. Yet another excellent and not uncommon 4Runner ownership report.

My wife's 2020 4Runner TRD Offroad done up to look like Pro gets 17mpg whether on flat road, going up a mountain, or dropped out of the back of a plane. She absolutely loves the thing and yeah, it doesn't see much offroad driving though she wants to learn. She loves small/midsize Toyota trucks and she paddleboards all the time. With the 4Runner, she simply drops the back window and shoves the board in the back. Couldn't be easier instead of having to strap the thing to a roof rack or similar. IMO, the 5th gen 4Runner could be one hell of a midsize truck but Toyota is just too dam conservative. Their 8 speed auto and reworking of the heads to use direct injection is all it would have taken. The truck would have improved MPGs earily be 15-20% and would be more powerful and quicker. I'll have to see what this new 4Runner looks like in person. Like most Toyota products these days, the thing looks a bit over styled and likely won't age well.

4Runner has a best in class 4WD system including 2-speed transfer case and lockable center differential. It’s a great all around package in one vehicle.

I’m much more interested in the LC250 or GX550. I have a deposit on a 1958 Land Cruiser that should land late May. Also at the top of the list at the local Lexus dealer for the GX. Decisions, decisions….

I'll take a new Land Cruiser over the new 4Runner. I much prefer the cleaner design. My guess is a lot of current GenX and older current 4Runner owners will gravitate more towards the new Land Cruiser, especially once they see how badass it will look with appropriate wheels and tires.

I like how it looks - if I was going to have a utility SUV, this would be a great choice. Not a "suburbatank" guy, but cool nonetheless.
The Wrangler would like to have a conversation too . So many "pavement princesses" that have wenches, light bars, flood lights, and snorkels, and rarely use them off-road or get dirty. All that to drive to and from work LOL. To each his/her own, I guess. |
