My brother and I have been out about 5 times in the last 3-4 weeks, and really haven't been hitting anything but a few rock fish. Last Sunday, 67 water, we ran out to Anacapa/Santa Rosa. We had some pinner anchovies and thought chances were good. Lots of boats but almost all straight rods.
Between islands I managed to jig two big mackerel, then we headed over to Chinese thinking some big stinky slab of mac would result in some happy halibut. Chummed one up pretty good, lots of other mackerel around, but not a single butt was seen. |

That Sunday trip we caught 2 legal calico, a sandy, several chuckleheads, and 2 whitefish. My brother had these rusty-ass filet knifes, and I did my best to put an edge back on them by using the back of the other knife. So he hacked up some fillet-like things and I took them home.
I was so exhausted when I got home that I forgot about them in the back of my truck and when I woke up to go to work they were already reeking so they went in the trash ;( |

We had the details on the "secret spot" for sand bass that was a short 20 minutes from the harbor (since I was on call) We SLAYED those bat rays again! They would nibble a squid on the back of the boat and next thing you know they are trying to wrap themselves around the anchor up front. My brother is half-serious about making a guide service to catch them

My brother has his boat in Ventura. Mom/Dad/bro live about 6 miles from the boat, so I scoop him up on the way there from about 11 miles away. It's a short jaunt to the bait/gas dock, then within 5 minutes we are in open water.

I tried a few brands of rods. Personally, I like Phenix rods the most. Rods are pretty hard to get recommendation on and really have to try them on water with few hours of use by yourself.
Worth mentioning. Another thing I like Phenix rods is their customer services (including warranty). |

I am a fisherman as well, concentrate mostly on fresh water (I live in a place with few lakes around).

Brother and I went out to the islands shortly AFTER the thunder storm that blew in from nowhere. Couldn't bring home a damn thing I caught!!!!!
Started with a smaller Bonita, those things have some wicked teeth!! Sliced him into the chum bag. Next up was a 3' leopard shark. Made one brief attempt to remove the hook, then just cut the line. On to another bat ray. We weren't anywhere near any kelp forests, what the heck are you doing cruising the mud flats at Chinese??? For the last, and I was SURE this was a nice fat halibut from the fact it had to tug it up from straight down under the boat, I hooked into about a 20lb black sea bass. No, I didn't keep it. We actually spent close to 5 minutes making sure he swam back away. We had to pull him back to the boat with a hook a few times, he started to swim then floated back up. My first blackie! |

Went out to Coronado Island during the Thanksgiving weekend. Been hearing some great tuna action this late in November this year so thought would give it a try.
Got hooked up to a Bluefin and fought for around 10-15 min with 60 lb test line. Seal took my meal at the end. What a bummer! Another dude on the boat got a 21 lb Bluefin. Have you guys been to La Paz or other Baja area for tuna action during Jan/Feb? Not sure how the weather is like over there during those months. |

Got my brother's boat back out of the water yesterday to get the trim fixed. I put a new jack, and redid the lights, but not going anywhere NEAR those wheels. He wants to get the trailer all set up so we can drive down to San Diego. Has a reciprocal with a dock down there to leave it 3 weeks at a time. |

I need to get back out in the water.
Last Saturday two of my friends caught a wahoo and 2 nice grouper. I puss*ed out because of 3-4's with occasional 5'. Can't really enjoy a brewski. He has a 28 Whitewater.
