^ any officer in california can sign it off for you. i'm not familiar when you get a ticket like this from the meter maid, so just make sure it's a correctable ticket.

Hahaha, I hear you on that VA sucks point. My sister didnt have her front plate on for 1 day and got 2 tickets, one at the mall, and one at dinner.

But on the subject of stupid tickets. I got an EXHAUST ticket in VA. Anyone who's ever heard comptechs on a TL knows that they're barely louder than a stock g35, and they're probably quieter than an srt4. She gave me ticket just for having aftermarket parts, and thats illegal in VA. I saw her and drove 42 in a 45, and completely got on my brakes to stop when the light turned yellow. She was ghosting behind me with her lights off and gave me a ticket! i was FURIOUS! All the freaking kids racing up and down jefferson avenue, and you're going to give my TL a ticket while i'm just trying to go to Wendys!

Same in CA, there was a time period that police chasing everyone who have the aftermarket exhaust and cut it. One of my friend been chase by 6 police cars and all of them are putting the hand gun on his head. LOL just because of the exhaust.

I haven't got a ticket for not having a front plate yet, in VA OR DC! Knock on wood.

I'm putting it back on next week though, to help protect my front from track debris.

US plates are six inches high and twelve inches wide. The long Euro plates are 110mm high and 520 mm wide.

The OP stated he still had time on the meter but the ticket wasn't for a time violation, it was for not having the front plate. Contrary to popular belief, "meter maids" are empowered to enforce more than just the ticking clock.

California law requires a front plate issued by the state (as do most of the other states); lack of one violates this law. It doesn't matter if you have a Euro sized plate on the front with the same number as on the back, California didn't issue the Euro plate and Molly Meter Maid can cite you for this.

Cry all you want to about it but until you get elected to Sacramento and change the law, that's the way it will stay out there.

If your rear plate is from a state that requires a front plate you're in violation and subject to citation. For example, if you're visiting San Francisco from San Diego without a number plate, regardless of whether you haven't been cited in San Diego, you're still liable -- and more likely -- to get a ticket in San Francisco.

Pssst bad example, SD and SF are in the same state; although, some will argue otherwise.

Psst, actually, it's exactly the example I wanted to use.

California requires both plates. If you're from San Diego and don't have the front plate yet haven't been cited, doesn't mean you won't get cited when visiting San Francisco.

BTW, I lived in San Jose, California for eight years. But even so, I know that San Diego and San Francisco are both in the same state. I also know that Sacramento is the capitol of said state.

Sorry I mis-read it last night. I just read it and again and I realize what you meant now.

"License plates have been around almost as long as automobiles, appearing in the earliest period of the transition from the horse, 1890 to 1910. The Netherlands were the first to introduce a national licence plate, first called a "driving permit", in 1898. The first licences were simply plates with a number, starting at 1. By August 8th of 1899 the counter was at 168. When the Dutch chose a different way to number the plates on January 15th 1906 the last issued plate was 2065.

In the U.S., where each state oversees plates, New York has required plates since 1901. At first, plates were not government issued in most American jurisdictions and motorists were obliged to make their own. Massachusetts and West Virginia were the first states to issue plates, in 1903. The earliest plates were made out of porcelain baked onto iron, or simple ceramic with no backing, which made them extremely fragile and impractical. Few examples of these earliest plates survive. Later materials experimented with include cardboard, leather, plastic, and during wartime shortages, copper and pressed soybeans.

Earlier plates varied in size and even shape from one jurisdiction to the next, such that if one moved, new holes would be needed drilled into the bumper to support the new plate. Standardization of plates came in 1957, when automobile manufacturers came to agreement with governments and international standards organizations. While peculiar local variants still exist, there are three basic standards worldwide.

12 by 6 inches (300mm by 150mm) - Used in the majority of the Americas.
20.5 by 4.5 inches (520mm by either 110 or 120 millimeters) - Used in the bulk of the European countries and many of their former overseas territories.
14.5 by 5.3 inches (372mm by 135mm) - Used in Australia and some other Pacific Rim countries, about halfway between the dimensions of the other two standards, longer than Western Hemisphere plates but taller than European ones."

I am not a lawyer, but I wonder if you can get away with the ED front plate provided the number matches the rear. I know that the DMV sites that I looked at say that you must use the plates issued to you but if the purpose is identification and you have a plate that is more visible than the minimum if it matters.

Nope, they have to be state issued plates. If you didn't get them from the state, they're not valid. Also, most states have code the regulates the size of the lettering on the plates. Euro plates will likely exceed that limit in most states with code like that. In Iowa, the lettering on the state plates can not be taller than 4 in. and wider then 5/8 of an inch.

Pull overed for no license plate

I live in SF and was pulled over for not having a front license plate. Anyway - it was a fix it ticket. I thought nothing of it and didn't take care of it within 30 days. Anyway, I had to pay $350! On my old car, I had a Euro plate and regularly recieved tickets, however never pulled over. Anyway, I figure I don't need the hassle, and definately don't want to be pulled over again. What a waste of time, and who knows what else the cop might find or do. Imagine if you had a drink with dinner and something stupid as a license plate gets a traffic cops attention.

I just find it funny how many people knowingly break the law (no front plate, after market parts they know are against state laws) then complain when the cops nail em for it.

If you're gonna knowingly break the law, suck it up and take it like a man, dont whine when you get caught... if you can't do that then don't break the law.
