They were only going for a three hour tour when they boarded the S.S. Minnow, but the storm could have blown them hundreds of miles before they were shipwrecked. The opening sort of implied that they were at sea at least one full night battling the storm.

The bigger questions are why everyone brought along trunks of clothing for a short sightseeing tour...and why a movie star and millionaire couple (who could obviously afford their own yachts) would be on a tourist-trap boat with the hoi polloi in the first place?????
