Question, if you're in a store and someone is raking items off the shelf and stealing them. Can you taser them or spray them with pepper spray? Would I get in trouble? I'm getting very sick of the freeloaders. I'm also sick of paying for them and my costs going up because of their stealing.

Unfortunately you can't as theft minus force or fear is just a property crime.

  • Don't do things that will attract the attention of law enforcement, thus, placing you in the position to receive a citation. If you are pulled over, be respectful. Attitude is important.
  • As for cops being "dicks", I suppose that's a matter of perspective. Sometimes we're labeled that way just because we issued someone a citation. So, are we really "dicks", or are we simply doing the job we were hired to do?

My brother, cops can be real dicks.....and it is without fail in direct response to the attitude of the client.

I'd argue that isn't true. Without fail suggests 100% of the time.

Cops are human, no better than the rest of us. That means they have bad days and good days, just like the rest of us. And a cop can be having a bad day and go off on a power trip because of other circumstances, even if the "client" was perfectly polite.

Also, there are bad apples in every job. Police are also not an exception.

But I am sure attitude has a ton to do with how you are treated in general. And generally speaking, my interactions with them have been pleasant. Which I suspect has a lot to do with the fact that we both know I'm 100% guilty of the reason they pulled me over for so I'm nicely contrite. One of the officers that pulled me over the last time just told me to keep it under 20km/h over the speed limit on the road I was on (marked as an 80) and let me go without a ticket. Figured that was decent of him and I try to do so, although sometimes it creeps up to 30 over.

I've asked two different cops the same question. I received two different responses.

Paraphrasing here...

If I'm pulled over while legally carrying (CCW Permit) do you prefer that I let you know that I'm carrying when you approach my vehicle and address me?

Cop#1: Yes, that is great to know and it is appreciated.

Cop#2: It doesn't matter to me if you tell me or not, I assume everyone I pull over is carrying. Legally or not.

Thoughts?

Sure, I should've said that almost without fail.....but honestly, it was in response to the blanket statement about cops being dicks.

We don't have CCW here ( I wish we did but that's a whole other story) I assumed everyone I am dealing with is either armed or could be.

In some states, CCW holders are obligated to inform a LEO at the beginning of an encounter. Surprisingly, NY State isn't one of them.....

I agree with both of them, but I'll add some color to their perspectives…..

….if I pull you over and you don't tell me, it may never become an issue, however, if I pull you out of that vehicle (…and I can for any reason), pat you down and I find a firearm on you, it's going to pose an issue until everything is cleared up (…and by issue I mean, cuffs, back of my car, etc). Do you really want to roll the dice? In most states, the CCW holder is also required to report any negative police interactions to the issuing agency. Do you really want to be the one that has to report you were detained (…and if you fail to disclose, yet, the incident is reported to the issuing agency, your run the risk of revocation or a denied renewal).

It shouldn't be an issue for anybody who is lawfully carrying to present their CCW along with their driver's license, vehicle registration and insurance. Not doing so is asking for a problem or a series of problems that could've been completely avoided. Trust me, it goes a long way with the law enforcement official you are dealing with.

I'm the range operator at our mobile station range until midnight; I'm on overtime in the field from midnight to 0600 hours.

You know what that means, right?!? Shoot a qual, eat, post on RennList, post on Bimmerpost, text a few people……repeat! Yay for free range ammo.

P.S. The first portion of my raise kicked in, so it bumped up my annual salary by $8k. Now we, as a department, are awaiting the other 5.5% to kick in along with our one-time $1500 disbursement. It should happen any day. It's a good day!

I thought Biden told us to get a shotgun and just rack the slide.

As an aside those old westerns where the guy would shoot the gun out of the guys hands when they were face on I always wondered - where did the bullet go AFTER hitting the gun?

More CCW updates at briefing today. It makes me incredibly happy to see these continually being issued to the law abiding citizens (…instead of just a few celebrities, politicians and "connected" people). The numbers in the county have jumped from 120-ish to around 3500. Bravo 2nd Amendment! Bravo!
