also, the lighting isn't very dynamic, looks just like high key blasting right on top of her from the right.

B&W is a lot more touchy to work with in digital than it was in film

I've definitely noticed this.... I used to shoot B&W film in a high school course i was in. But again, a black and white in your hand is different from a black and white on an LCD. I'd like to try editing on a Plasma to see what's what.
