also, the lighting isn't very dynamic, looks just like high key blasting right on top of her from the right.

hmmm... try adding some clarity and maybe even fill. also if you have any recovery being used dial it way back, there is no apparent white in the photo at all.

B&W is a lot more touchy to work with in digital than it was in film

I've definitely noticed this.... I used to shoot B&W film in a high school course i was in. But again, a black and white in your hand is different from a black and white on an LCD. I'd like to try editing on a Plasma to see what's what.

Why so many? Was that taken at night or something that would cause you to stack?

I'm thinking that to cover the subject with around a 50mm lens, from that perspective would take, at most, 6-images. What gives?
