It is rather large and heavy. I was really torn between the 100-400L, the 300 f/4L, and the 400 f5.6L. All can be had at similar price points, with the 100-400L being slightly more expensive. I feel that the range will be beneficial to me, though. I can't wait to get out and shoot with it!

you'll enjoy it. You may not use it as much as you like, but when you do, it's a delight.

I have it and love it, but it doesn't see a lot of camera time sadly.

the one thing I don't like about it is that it's not a consistent F stop. So, I tend to set it at F5.6 so it never chances on me, unless i want to try and get a tiny bit more bokeh at 100. But if I really want more bokeh at 100, i'd put on basically any other lens I own as the rest of them go down to 2.8 or lower.

I did a lot of horse jumping photography with it, and it did a fantastic job. It's also fun to shoot the moon with and some wildlifing.

It's also a very nice lens for making people laugh and feel uncomfortable, just with how big it can get to.

me with my 100-400 not extended at all. And no, I try not to scrunch my face up like that when i shoot now.

yeah... unfortunately I have yet to use mine. Whenever I want to use it, I find that I've left it at home and have to just deal with using the 70-200mm f/4L IS.

that's half the problem with the size.

It used to fit in my bag with my old 70-200 F4, but once I picked up the 70-200 F2.8, there was no room left in my back as the 2.8 is just so big. The 2.8 is actually a tiny bit longer then the 100-400mm. and a bit heavier/ bulkier.

I think i need to start looping it through my belt.

Also, carrying all that. I tryed to go up a flight of stairs with my backpack on. I made it up 10 flights, and I was almost hyperventilating with legs burning. All that crap weighs a ton!

The 100-400 is great if you need zoom, I went with the 300 and would rather save and get the 500 vs the 400 just for the increase in IQ. I do use the 300 quite a bit.

My new Kata backpack holds the 100-400mm comfortably though. Unfortunately, winter is upon us, so me going out to shoot is becoming more and more of a rarity.

Thanks for the insight. I struggled with the fact that it doesn't have a constant aperture, as it would be my first lens without, but I feel it should be very versatile for my intentions.

Yeah, I figured I'd start with the zoom before potentially moving on to a long prime.

Here's an image taken with the 100-400L @ 100mm. A quick test shot , and not really indicative of what it should be capable of, lol.

now you need a 100 and a 400 comparo so we can see how much zoom it provides on a FF camera body

I'd offer to do it, but as you saw from my picture previously, i can't seem more then 100 feet with the snow at the moment.

you might consider a 70-200 it's a great range for that sort of thing, especially on the crop body.

the 4 stop image stabilizer with 2 modes is a real winning combo for what you're looking into.

I would have, but it was 11 degrees with the wind blowing 30-40mph. I got out of the car with full intentions of walking around and taking a few shots, but after standing outside for a few minutes, it was time to get on the road.

I volunteer myself to do this test in the future, though.

Great shot, man. Love the processing, too. Definitely look into one of the 70-200 zooms for motocross. Or, if you want a prime lens, check out the Canon 200/2.8L. It's a great bargain for the price you can pick up a used one.
