Self-Proclaimed EV Advisor Thinks His Tesla Is on Fire, Emergency Responders Wreck His Car

A self-proclaimed EV advisor saw steam coming out of his car while charging and alerted emergency services, thinking it was smoke. The first responders disabled his vehicle, not knowing that steam is a normal occurrence while Supercharging in cold weather.
The funny thing is that the Model Y owner was convinced he faced a life-threatening situation, which is why he also notified the NHTSA about the incident. Although he later admitted in a Space (live audio conference on X) that what he saw was steam, not smoke.

Mercedes-Benz EQB EV burns down while charging at dealer
31 December 2023
This afternoon, a Mercedes-Benz EQB350 caught fire in Johor, as shown in several viral videos circulating on social media. What makes this incident particularly noteworthy is that it happened right in front of the dealer, Cycle & Carriage Johor Bahru in Skudai, apparently while charging at a DC fast charger.
According to Buletin TV3, the fire, which was reported at 2:45pm, engulfed 90% of the car and destroyed 20% of the charging station. We have reached out to an MBM spokesperson, who said that the company could not comment on the matter until an investigation has been conducted. This latest incident is the second high-profile EV fire in Malaysia, following on from another one involving a Tesla Model Y in Puchong in October.

Glad it wasn't a ICE vehicle, we might have a hole in the planet.

I think they clipped the main battery connector. Kind of like the master plug on a APC. Then they hosed down the owner.

Never saw this coming.
Select EVs kicked off tax credit list in 2024 will be discounted $7,500 by General Motors
General Motors said it will make sure its new electric vehicles remain price competitive even as new rules from U.S. Treasury disqualify some of the carmakers' electric vehicles for the $7,500 consumer tax credit this year.
The new rules prevent allowing the credit on vehicles made with components that come from companies tied to the governments of China, Iran, North Korea or Russia, as the Detroit Free Press, part of the USA TODAY Network, reported last month. This stipulation is making it harder for EVs to qualify for the tax credit.

So tax payers save the big three to save union jobs. Then the big three make a deal with the union for new contracts and a guarantee of new jobs in EV production. Then General Motors decides they would rather off shore the battery jobs rather than complying with Government union requirements. Bottom line, Tax Payers and union workers screwed, Chinese laughing all the way to the bank.

It's an issue that has largely been attributed to newly designed/introduced EV's. Once manufacturers figured out what was going on, they recalled and/or re-designed and it's not been as much of an issue.

Rivian are pikers compared to Lucid
EV startup Lucid is losing over $500,000 for every car it sells
The startup, founded by former Tesla Chief Engineer Peter Rawlinson, posted second-quarter results on Monday that once again fell short of analyst expectations. The company posted $150.9 million in revenue from the 1,404 vehicles it sold in the three-month period. Coupled with a net loss of roughly $764 million, the results suggest a loss of more than $500,000 per vehicle.

It is a shitshow in the city I lived. Another 20 million dollars of the Canadian hard earn tax payers money went down the drain. How could this happen. Transit's battery-electric bus manufacture files for bankruptcy.

America’s Power Grid Could Gum Up EPA’s Plan To Electrify School Buses, Report Finds
The power grid may be lacking sufficient infrastructure to reach the Environmental Protection Agency’s (EPA) electric school bus goals in a timely manner, according to an EPA inspector general report.
The report, which focuses on the potential problems that the agency’s Clean School Bus Program could face, explicitly asserts that the increased demand on utility companies for power and related charging infrastructure associated with the initiative could delay its implementation.

There have been several instances of the lithium ion batteries that power electric buses catching fire in recent years, with the toxicity of the resulting fumes sending first responders to the hospital. Cold temperatures also generally tend to cause diminishing range and performance for the lithium ion batteries because they must work harder to generate power, and the cold can also damage the component cells within a battery, according to Renogy, a green energy company.

Additionally, the lithium ion batteries within electric buses are very heavy and make them considerably heavier than gas-powered buses, according to the Maine Department of Transportation. One related consequence is that electric buses tend to add much more strain to the pavement; for example, the use of electric buses in Indianapolis, Indiana, prompted the pavement transited by its electric buses to deteriorate within several years, which in turn led to more frequent road construction projects and inconveniences for residents, according to the Thoreau Institute.

Worse yet water vapor is a green house gas. One more reason why EV's are bad for the environment.
According to new research from astronomers at the University of Geneve (UNIGE) and CNRS laboratories in Paris and Bordeaux, the runaway greenhouse gas effect could easily be spurred forward by water vapor, which could effectively cause planets like Earth to become so hot that they are boiled alive.

To me, range is only important on a long road trip. On a long road trip I want to drive fast. And I often travel with temps below freezing.

A 380mi (EPA) Model X can turn into a 150 mi range at higher speeds on the highway in winter.

Consider that most drivers won't start a trip at 100% of charge and won't run the car range all the way to zero, and the real range is more like 100-120mi.

That is simply pitiful. So EVs may be practical for commuting in CA. But they are not practical for long distance driving in cold climates.

(and I'm a huge EV proponent - they work well as a short distance vehicle and my gf has one that I like)

Looked it up. That data was from five years ago. Since then Tesla has rolled out heat pumps that have reduced the impact on their cars in cold temps. See this real world eval of EVs in Norway. It’s pretty interesting.

Hasn't BMW been doing that for 30-40 years with their 12V batteries (see BMW BST)? Really wonder who thought it wouldn't be needed to disconnect high voltage in an accident and instead rely on emergency crews to cut apart the car to find the disconnect.
