BMW does the same in Europe.

Over here, the debadged look is usually the choice of those driving 4-pot diesels.

Concealer of sorts.

See? You can't win amongst those that care about this sort of thing.

Fake badges are cool now but only if you put a luxury badge on a complete POS.

The badges on "M lite" SUVs (e.g. X3 or X4 M40i) use smaller, straighter lettering. (The "X4" on a base model is taller and slightly italicized.) Maybe they got hold of/stole legit badges (or good fakes) and just messed up the placement?

Just pointing out that when you think it is "Euro" or special to delete it, that that is the reason most do it. And that most manufacturers over here offer the option.

Cars with proper engines are typically still badged over here--while diesel 4 pots are debadged.

Funny you should mention that. I was looking at the X5 (previous page) and noticed that the X5 and the X5M's have completely different X5 badges. On the ///M, the X seems thicker. Also the X5 and the ///M badge are the same height, compared to the fake tacked on ///M.

328, I'm guessing. No F30 318 (at least in the US).

No, the original photo is from a first-gen F26 X4, where it had its badge placement like this, so this was not a fake badge.
