Ashes don't take up much space.

You kneel down to see the front panel on the NAS box in the bottom of the rack, and end up with spinal x-rays, a brace, 4 prescriptions, and a workers comp case

I always place UPS units and batteries in the bottom of every rack when I build one...and we don't even have to deal with earthquakes where keeping the heaviest mass close to the floor is a consideration.....

This is just a 2-post rack. All the others have the UPS fill the bottom third. Although that, when it comes time to change battery packs, has it's own issues.
The NAS just sits on the bottom attachment to the floor, so it's TECHNICALLY off the ground in case of water intrusion. I wasn't involved in the purchase of said NAS. But when the kind gentleman with a gun on his waist said I needed these items connected to the network, I did as asked. We have a racked replacement, but the thought of moving GIGs of data using xcopy32, to maintain names and rights, is daunting.

Although having said that, yesterday I had to use some old contacts at the university to help fix an email issue Wifey was having and today the FIL called because he's having problems logging into his laptop. So the struggle continues.

On one memorable occasion, I had to make a special extraction tool to help a fellow remove some swollen batteries while the units were still in a steel rack. The batteries had swollen so much, we couldn't get the APC units out of the tight-fitting rack. Heh!

Ask me why I don't have an APC-brand *anything* in my house, and why I now let the junior staff change the batteries at work? At least two of them have caused non-trivial injuries to me...one by exploding in a plasma ball and the other by shorting out and burning three of my fingers bad enough to need medical treatment.....
