Yeah thanks to the arc-shaped structure and windows. Thanks for the comment.

Here's 700mm hand held at 1/125-sec. Focusing through the grass was also a challenge:

Wow, that's an awesome capture. I really like the lighting. I can barely hand hold 300mm with IS so I can only imagine how much more difficult it is with 700mm.

I'm surprised that you had so much DOF when shooting at f/2.8. Is the EXIF correct?

The subject is a great blend of old looking (I think that's a relatively new statue) surrounded by modern. Great light also.

Thank you.

It DOES require some practice. The focusing through the grass is the really tough part, since the camera fights you all the way. I probably should have switched to MF.

Yes, the exif is accurate. I shot in 2.8 all day since most of the museum were prohibiting flash and mono/tripods. So I went with a 2.8 aperture and cranked up the ISO and took advantage of the natural lighting. I took the flash out only when I absolutely had to; when I could, of course.

I agree that the DOF is pretty deep compared to my other 2.8 lenses but adding a bit of sharpening helped to hide part of the background blur. In 1:1 you can clearly see that the front of the statue was in focus, but not the background. This is the first of 5 statues built for the Canadian War Museum. For the other ones, I didnt had as much natural light as this one. So they didnt turn out as nice.

Oh you Canadians! You and your artwork, so very nice. I like how the background lines in the last one add to the image.

Thanks.

That museum is AWESOME. But not so photo-friendly. Meaning that there's so much stuff, you have to think a lot before taking a shot to make sure its not too cluttered. Lucky thing my pregnant girlfriend had to sit every 15 minutes because I would had been eye-balled really bad.

I took about 500 shots that day, around 50-60 keepers. Which is pretty good. From the 1812 war to the latests Afghanistan deployments, this museum has it all.
