I would say It's a combination of car & driver, if you look at both Lewis & Max's team mate's performance I would say that's pretty much the pace of the cars, the rest is made up by the driver.

I tend to be more logical and evaluate just as you are. See how the teammate's performance is. Mercedes has the better car(s) this season, definitely in the straights for sure. Takes a great driver to extract everything he can out of a car.

I think if Alonso had a top 3 car, he would be competing for WDC. He is driving the absolute piss out of his car. Unreal driver that guy.

There is no one that is involved in motorsports that will agree with this statement. The RB-16B has been faster in almost every situation this year. In fact, it is only recently that Mercedes has been able to be even close.

The phenomenon you speak of with regard to team mates has to do with the operational window of the car. The operational window of the Mercedes was very narrow which is how the RB-16B has been, as well. As Mercedes has opened that operational window, BOT can now extract more from the car. This is why it SEEMS that BOT has been better the past few races. It isn't that his skill has increased, it's that the car has been improved.

The situation with RB is the same as in the years since RIC has left the team. RB design the car around Max's foibles and the hell with the rest. It only operates in the Max Window. This MAY be a good strategy to force a WDC but it's a terrible strategy for the WDC. A maximum error on the part of the organization because it leaves them, more often than not, fighting 1 on 2 vs Merc rather than 2 on 2.

I must admit that VW does sound somewhat conservative though acceptable if it means Merc will be trashed without the MGU-H but yes RB Porsche-Audi is more convincing.

If this happens and they brand it Porsche I might be switching teams

I think simplification of the PU system is a good thing for F1.
It allows more engine manufacturers to compete on the same level by keeping the costs down.
This increases the sovereignity of the teams.
