Bourbon barrels are new and only used once. Most of them go to Scotland as about 90% of Scotches are aged in used Bourbon barrels.

Here's an interesting article:

Quick check shows about 1.7million barrels per year from KY, and Scotland producing 1.4-3 million barrels, so no oversupply

Based on this online requirement to be called bourbon:

On 4 May 1964, the United States Congress recognized Bourbon Whiskey as a “distinctive product of the United States.” The Federal Standards of Identity for Distilled Spirits (27 CFR 5) state that bourbon must meet these requirements:
  • Bourbon must be made of a grain mixture that is at least 51% corn.
  • Bourbon must be distilled to no more than 160 (U.S.) proof (80% alcohol by volume).
  • Bourbon must be aged in new, charred oak barrels.
  • Bourbon may not be introduced to the barrel at higher than 125 proof (62.5% alcohol by volume).
  • Bourbon which meets the above requirements and has been aged for a minimum of two years, may (but is not required to) be called Straight Bourbon.
  • Bourbon aged for a period less than four years must be labeled with the duration of its aging.
  • If an age is stated on the label, it must be the age of the youngest whiskey in the bottle.
  • Only whiskey produced in the United States can be called bourbon.

Yup. Gotta be a LOT of used barrels from Bourbon. I think many are shipped to Scotland for scotch aging. I guess some reroute through use as barrels for sherry and other stuff before getting to scotland adding some flavor to the final scotch product. Thus my favorite scotch - Balvenie Doublewood.

I am trying to imagine a 160 proof bourbon and what it would taste like...

Let me know how you like the Caol Ila and Clynelish compared to the Talisker. Talisker is the only one I've had of the three, and it's such a good bottle!

I got that same one and the green one with Talisker 10, Lagavulin 16 and Cragganmore 12.

Those are a nice way to try a few different ones.

I'm going to revisit each again tonight. Initial impressions is that I like the Clynelish the most, but I tasted each in sequence separately last night and would like to do three pours so I can do it side by side and prior to having had wine with dinner.

Yeah, I saw that they also had a "strong collection" pack yesterday. Odd that they didn't feature that one in their newsletter as well. Just the Coastal one was in the email.

Because of this thread I've now started to experiment with scotch, whiskey, and bourbon. I've bought a few bottles of names mentioned here and some have been hit or miss for me. But I still like learning about these spirits.

Yesterday I was at my local Costco and went into the liquor store to see if they anything new. Well the clerk comes up to me and said they just got in only 30 bottles of Buffalo Trace Straight Bourbon Whiskey, and they will only sell one to a customer. It was only $19.99 so I bought it figuring if I don't like it no big deal. It's actually pretty good.

Awesome! Glad we could help bring another person into Whisky!

I like Buffalo Trace, but I know there are a few on the here who don't. I'm not into bourbon all that much, but it's great all around for neat or mix.

I like blended scotch better, but expanding my palate to bourbon is something I've wanted to explore. I also bought a bottle of Bardstown Fusion Series Bourbon recently. I think I'm going to take a break on impulse buying. I never really drank before the covid, yet now I've gone through a few 750ml bottles and one 1.75L in the past two months.

COVID has not helped my drinking either... just so much easier to do so when you are working from home

Buffalo Trace is a good entry level, and if you like that you would also like Eagle Rare. Once you find a few that you really like just list them off and I bet we can give you a more specified list of things to try.

Thanks. I think I'm going to work on the various whiskey, scotch, and bourbon I've gotten during the past two months. I've realised that I like the Blended Scotch better than the others. And surprisingly I like the Costco 12yr a lot and the Monkey Shoulder also. And of course I also have a few bottles of JWB that I'm going to work on soon enough.

-Cheers.

Ok, got back to these tonight. I’d rank them Clynelish 14, followed by Talisker 10, and lastly the Caol Ila 12.

The Caol Ila was just typical peaty smoke that kind of beats you over the head. Great if thats what you’re looking for.

The Clynelish and to a lesser degree the Talisker, there’s peat and smoke, but its woven through the other flavor profiles a bit more. It’s more interesting and complex. I’m partial to the Clynelish because it’s on the sweeter side, hints of orange peel and citrus and layered with the peat, which is less on the nose and more the flavor.

The Talisker is equally smoky on the nose and on the mouth.

After many samplings I've always come back to DW15.

Is anyone familiar with the Dalmore selections?

I'd love to try the 15.

I find it OK. For the price there are better (my opinion) available.

That being said, if you enjoy trying different scotches with different characters, then go for it.

Have you tried Monkey Shoulder?

Price is right, blended malt from three Speyside distilleries. Might fit you needs.
