I would assume thats the cat in the top right corner of the picture? Course I have been wrong before.
Heat may also rise but the amount of air going over the turbos when they are lower seems like it would be much greater than when they are nestled in the V under engine paneling like that. Also with the alternator right there creating even more heat? |

BMW will probably channel air from the front over top of the motor to prevent heat from building up around the turbos if it's an issue. Honestly, the vast majority of engine cooling is done by the liquid cooling system, not airflow. Getting the turbos and exhaust manifolds up and away from the water jacket is a good thing. There are no cats in those pictures. I think you're mistaking one of the air/water intercoolers for a cat. |

The water heat exchanger is at the left (engine front) and the cylindrical object on the right (engine rear) is one of the primary catalytic converters.

Sorry about that. One of the photos isn't showing up for me, and it's the one he quoted above. The plant I'm mooching internet service from is blocking it and not the others for some reason. I just found another angle of it from another source and you are correct. |

Ah good, I was starting to think I was going nuts. hahah.
I suppose your correct about the majority of cooling done with the radiator and such but still, with all the heat issues even the N54 seems to be having your that area right there will be 900 degrees plus (cats operate at around 800 degrees even at idle). Course I'm sure the engineers that are much more intelligent than me have gone over this from every angle. |

Sorry. I should have caught on when the photo you quoted showed up as a red X. As far as the N54 heat issues go, I think that was more about the lack of an oilcooler than actual packaging, unless there's something else I'm not aware of. |

No problem, I'm sure the engine will be fine with heat management and all, thats what happens when you invest millions into something. Just seems like that will be a pain to keep cool up there.
