SEO. The more places their web site link is listed, the higher that some web site search engines list their page in the results.

One type of spambots love to make a gibberish "like that picture/comment" forum post to a busy thread, wait a few days for it to wash off the front page, and then go back and add their SEO links and content so that only the robots can find them.

The ones that I saw from this weekend were just garden-variety SEO, probably from a third-world country and I suspect with internationally-encoded text in a foreign language that looks like gibberish to most people.

I really have pity on the mods here, since the forum software they are managing seems to be lacking in the common protection methods used in other message board software.....

Makes sense. Please, by all means provide some suggestions to this site's admin.

Upgrade. One step up from a BBS with this version of vBulletin. Let me dig around for my old Hayes 300 baud.

It was particularly funny to find a porn site link in an edited post appreciated by a bunch of people in the "What song..." thread.

That and people who quote SEO spam with the links intact drives me crazy.

I love the OT gaming section here, because gamer threads attract gamer spambots. It also seems that the forum software is mis-configured to give out post counts to that sub-forum, so a whole bunch of spambots and PM coding thieves can run up their post counts there with irrelevant "I agree" and "nice post" replies. Example from this morning, user jingsu running up their post count with 4 posts:

FWIW, part of my pay check comes from hunting screwy Nigerian princes and other scammers.....

Well as of now I've gotten zero responses from Admin which is frustrating. Post anything remotely close to politics and they'll come out of the woodwork. This? Nah, who cares, right?

I’m going to laugh my ass off when this thread gets moved to the site related questions forum.

Those are different cases: the people I mentioned appreciated a popular song clip which was subsequently replaced with a porn link (without their knowledge, apparently: appreciates can be withdrawn, as I see).

Back to the subject at hand. I've concluded that no one that runs this place gives a crap.

With almost 30 years of experience managing volunteer organizations, I see a lot of burned-out individuals fighting a hopeless cause.

Thank you to the mod/admin team, from someone who appreciates your efforts.....

Some of the posts had links, one to a software download, malware I mean, I reported that particular one since for chits and giggles I downloaded it on a virtual machine and it got picked up as a trojan.

You could try PMing Jason, the administrator here. I've talked with him before. Nice, approachable, and he responded.
