He showed me some pretty cool stuff. He has MLB figures of players from the 90's SEALED in original packing which I know can bring in some good cash. Some rare Tanaka card (1 of 1), complete sets of Upper Deck, Topps, Donruss from the 80's through 00's. Signed stuff from God knows who and he even gave me some cards while I was at his place but left them at the kitchen counter

Fuck him and his cards. Who gives a shit about baseball anyway.....

You are better off without family like that even though he is still your family, sad imo.

F30, you seem like a stand up guy. Followed a couple of your other threads. You did more than most for someone who you really aren't that close to. Don't feel guilty about not helping that guy anymore. Sounds like he has that "I'm entitled" thing going on since once upon a time he was almost somebody.

I treat people in general how I want to be treated. I've been walked over at times in my life and I've learned being too nice all the time, you get burned. I feel bad for my cousin because I looked up to him as a teenager when he was out playing for the Helena Brewers hoping he'll make it to the majors. His fastball, mechanics weren't MLB ready, left in 97 and went into the banking business. Then medical/mental reasons is why he is where he's at. I can only hope for the best for him.

Maybe help him sell the sports memorabilia but dont lend him any more cash.
when u have family asking to pay their bills and shit then it's better to just stay away from them. Asking for money and asking to support him is two different things lol.

Never give your family member a loan, that's what ruins relationships. Just give them the money but don't expect to get it back.

A wise person once told me to let someone "borrow" what you're able to "give" because borrows tend to always become gifts...

OP, my little brother was (is) the same way. The best way I can describe it is that he "preys on the kindness of the human spirit." Constantly making "YOLO" decisions then expecting his friends/family to pick up the slack. I made the mistake of getting an apartment with him while I was in college and ended up having to evict him because he refused to get/hold a job and never paid rent. Evicting your little brother sucks.

Rest easy in the fact that you stepped up to help someone in need - you have no obligation to continue supporting them though.

Brings up an interesting question

At what point do people "cut off" family?

I agree that it would be hard to give him any money when you see so many poor financial decisions surrounding him.

I'd rather give the kid a 529 plan.

F30lolz - Couple of comments...

Fool me once, shame on you....fool me twice, shame on me.

I learned long ago, never loan family members money or go into business with family members.

I empathize with your relative. Making $$ in a sport is damn hard...but the odds are astronomical against someone from making the MLB show.

I've been faced with this dilemma a number of times with two close family members. I helped both at first, but then realized that their financial priorities are totally hosed - they never learn and they refuse to stop spending their money on foolish stuff.

Example: Bro-in-law's wife calls my wife and says that they don't have enough money to buy new school clothes for their then grade-school daughter. So quite naturally, my wife agrees to take our niece out shopping for new clothes.

Next day, bro-in-law pulls up out front with his daughter. She's all giggles and can't wait to go shopping with her aunt. Meanwhile, I can't help but notice the U-Haul low-bed trailer behind his pickup truck. Strapped down to the trailer is his new, clone Harley-Davidson motorcycle. So, I asked him what's up with the motorcycle. He replied, "Well, I've pretty much completed the kit, but I'm in over my head with the electrical wiring, so I'm taking it to an expert motorcycle shop to be completed.

So I'm standing there, going WTF!

We didn't disappoint our little niece, but never again will we allow ourselves to get sucked into such a trap. Pretty darned disappointing.

That is such a slap in the face. So getting the wiring fixed by an expert is more important than school close for his daughter? Good that you got clothes for the niece but jeez....

I lend to my brothers, but only money I can safely "write-off" When I treat it that way, it seems I eventually always get it back. Some are more eventually than others. . .

I'd say you did the right thing. Although it turns out he wasn't as broke as you thought, you just didn't know that. I hate when people take advantage of a situation, like he did with your thanksgiving text. That's just so frustrating!
