I dumped the desktop for a laptop several years ago, but have since gone back to a desktop for home use. I have a laptop for work with a docking station and that is a nice way to go if you need the portability of a laptop with the full keyboard, mouse and dual monitors for more serious work/play. I also use my phone more now, so the laptop wasn't really that important for me any more. I have a tablet, too that I use when I travel somewhere on vacation.

Depends on your needs. Day to do day browser/excel/ppt/word, laptop is fine.
If you're a power user, editing video, running intensive applications, then a desktop is usually a better value cost vs. performance. |

When I travel, I can't wait to get back to work on my desktop. Never been a laptop fan and only use them when I can't use my desktop.
I dont game though, just work. Lots and Lots and Lots of spreadsheets on multiple monitors.

I have a laptop, desktop (gaming) and an iPad. I use the laptop exclusively to configure some of my RC aircraft. I use the iPad when I'm out on my patio and I use the desktop for everything else including email and simulators.
I built this desktop 4 years ago. I selected the mobo that will allow years of upgrades. Fun stuff, I think.

I have a laptop only. Haven't had a desktop in years. For me it's too big and bulky. Takes up too much room. Laptop can do everything I need. Haven't been in to games for about 15 years and that would be my only reason for a desktop.

I have a laptop for work, a desktop for family photos/videos/gaming and a tablet for couch surfing. Seems like the perfect setup for my life.

2 gaming rigs, 2 mini pcs and a laptop that pretty much only gets used being connected to the car.

I'm a gamer and therefore have a desktop. Just bought a new laptop to surf when watching TV and travelling. Neither used for work.

Had a gaming rig, laptop for work
COVID + WFH happened, now I use my desktop 99% of the time, including games and work. Laptop is used for movies in bed or if I need to go on a trip

before covid I only used my job laptop and cell phone. Having a OnePlus phone, rooted with all cracked feature, makes 90% of the job with the huge screen.
If I had a Samsung, it probably be my only 'computer' device with DEX. But since covid, I'm starting to use my tower : most video and photo editing are only compatible with high end Nvidia card. Also Ive played cyberpunk. Do I have a good $$$$/Usage ratio? No ! When my tower will be outdated, I'll use a egpu with my everyday laptop. and on a far future, only my cell phone, if gaming streaming services are becoming good. |

I just can't get used to a laptop. It's the keyboard. In fact, I prefer the older type keyboards where the keys are larger and move more. And, of course, the screen. I have a 36" monitor.

I guess the question is, if you need to move, you have a laptop, why would you use a desktop too? Most member answered ; performance. And I understand is also way easier to upgrade. Agree for the clicky keyboard, I'm using a 95' model M keyboard, real one, made in UK . love it |

I am running the Alienware Area 51m R2 to do whatever I need and it is a beast. Do not miss a desktop in the least. Everyone is different and this laptop is big and heavy compared to the business products. If needed can always dock it for more monitors.

I've got 2 proper desktops (1 for gaming, 1 as a sort of HTPC), 1 gaming laptop, 1 ultrabook laptop (dual-booting Win10 & Ubuntu but mainly used as a Smart trainer for cycling), a 15" laptop, a FreeNAS server, a homebrew pfSense router/firewall, and a server hosting several VMs, Containers (Docker/Rancher, LXC), etc...

As said before desktop is the way to go for gaming, built a simracing rig during the pandemic and use it as my main PC too. I also find sitting at a desk with a full mouse and keyboard more comfortable that using a laptop

You guys complaining about wanting to use a real mouse and keyboard realize you can connect these to a laptop correct?? LMAO......
Edit; same with a monitor haha. I use my laptop for everything, but I don't game(on PC) or have a need for high performance really. I connect it to my 36" wide screen monitor and bluetooth mouse and keyboard and it does everything I need it to do. Last edited by IllSic_Design; 04-20-2021 at 10:21 PM.. |

I have a couple great laptops year old XPS 15 & XPS 13 that I used back in the old days when I traveled. As nice as they are I like going to my office home/work and sitting down to a real desktop. Nothing beats a triple 27” 4K monitor array driven by a RTX3070 with a full size wired keyboard & mouse and a nice pair of active speakers. I’ve tried docking high-end laptops and it’s just not the same.
Especially when I’m playing Unreal Tournament 2004 |
