I find it amusing to hear people who think this whole thing is a big hoax but now that some if not most companies are now making mandatory for their employees to wear mask at work do they still feel this is a big hoax? Just curious

Not to start a whole thing but I think that its been blown a little out of proportion, especially for younger healthy people. We had had to shut down one of our warehouses because there was a covid case, so masks are mandatory for financial reasons and not for health concerns. That being said, Ive been wearing it because I like getting paid and may places around me are asking that they be worn. Its not really an inconvenience so I play along.

"Not airborne" - well if someone sneezes, its definitely going to be airborne for a bit. Idiot.

"Blown out of proportion" - maybe you're lucky that your area hasn't been too affected yet, and quite frankly the only way for it to stay that way is to take the precautions we should have started months ago. Being in an epicenter, I already lost a (young) friend, and a few others in the hospital including relatives who we've already accepted, most likely won't make it. Death rate is low, but still high enough that if the disease spirals out of control where you are, you're going to be affected personally one way or another.

Anyways back on the topic of masks - wife ordered some black bedsheets and sewed some up. Not N95 grade but should protect you from me and vice versa. We tried blowing out a candle while wearing the mask, and the flame didnt even flicker. Tried the same with an ASTM level 3 mask, same result. Then took a dollar store 1 layer cloth mask and the flame went out ASAP. Not scientific, but common sense says at least it makes a marginal difference.

So the mask isn't really for your protection but so you don't infect others. The virus can enter your body through mucus membranes like the inside of your nose or mouth, also your eyes and the most common method of infection is putting your fingers in your mouth or rubbing your eyes. I think the whole "wear a mask" at work has as much to do with corporate liability as it does to prevent he spread of the disease. FTR I'm not trying to diminish the impact this virus has had on folks.

I feel like the "blown out of proportion" remark was directed towards me. I have had some friends and family come down with it and it sucks, but I have had way more friends and family lose their jobs. My wife's 86 year old grandfather has it, and he hasnt left his nursing home in almost a year, they arent sure how he even got it since no one else has tested positive. It all sucks and I am sorry about your loss, but the vast majority of people survive and as studies seem to be finding, don't even know they have it. I wear my mask, wash my hands, avoid elderly/sick family, and stay home as much as possible, there isnt much else I can do.

Yes, exactly - its to protect "you from me" and "me from you". Now layer the asymptomatic transmission on top of it all. This is why the disease spreads like wildfire. Not wearing a mask is the worst thing you could do to ensure it spreads. Wearing one at least protects others from you, if you are asymptomatic and there is no way of knowing till wider testing. I understand a lot of the members here who don't wear one are in more rural areas. But all it takes is 1 person to ignite the fire and boom, there goes the rest of your town. Random antibody testing in NYC has already shown that almost 20% of the population here have antibodies, thus the majority are asymptomatic carriers who were unknowingly spreading the disease around earlier in the year.

Sorry to hear about your wife's grandfather. No - it wasn't directed towards you in particular and it sounds like you understand the seriousness of it all. I don't disagree the economic impact sucks but i'd gladly lose my job (my wife already did) if that means someone else surviving.

The thing that isn't being tracked at this point is the loss of life due to the economic impact and those who aren't getting or seeking required medical attention because of this virus. That number may end up being hight that the direct loss of life from Covid19.

The fact that 20% seems to be the asymptomatic number seems to indicate that the number of folks actually infected is likely much higher than the "confirmed cases", therefore the mortality rate is likely much lower as a percentage than is being reported.

Yes....they still think it's a hoax. We have a guy here who emblazoned "COVID-1984" across his mask. Anyone who stands still long enough will get the soapbox lecture of how this entire pandemic was a way for the U.S. to force the planet into socialism.

Agree completely with this. We have a forklift operator who is currently on suspension until further notice for investigation of refusal to wear a face mask. We are a food manufacturing facility so this is actually deemed as refusal to comply with PPE standards/regulations. He won't be back. My job may not be the greatest place to work on the planet, but it sure beats unemployment. My only inconvenience with the mask is the constant fidgeting with it in order to keep my glasses from getting fogged up.

I heard an interview with Dr David Katz the other day and he said that you are seeing a roughly 20% infection rate everywhere. Italy and Sweden for example took very different paths and they both still have a roughly 20% rate. If Sweden put only the sick/old on lockdown they would have a much lower death rate. It was an interesting interview but I'm sure you could find someone with an opposing opinion.

Both are very valid points and i don't disagree. But if people are dying to get back to normal, then why won't they do something as simple as putting on a mask temporarily till it all blows over? Everything has to be an argument on why it violates their constitutional right X, Y or Z. Or an excuse on why the virus doesn't have legs or wings to fly around. Asian countries were able to control the virus as this is not their first rodeo with a pandemic and everyone was in it together.

The neck gait or dealie I got breathes enough that my sunglasses don't fog up. That probably means all the covid can get out though.

I bought a couple of those also. Not a fan. It fogs up the glasses also. It's also very tight around my mouth and nose, plus I have to bring it up over my ears in order for it to stay up. At this point, because I am bald; I look like an uncircumcised penis with glasses on.

Try washing your glasses with warm soap & water daily (bonus: it'll kill any covid hanging out on your lens) and they shouldn't fog up. I've seen others use some sort of spray as well.
