For scotches, I highly recommend Tamdhu Batch Strength #2 or #3.

The Macallan Edition No.4 is pretty good I thought.

But I also like peaty scotches too, I think the Ardbeg 10 is a good value for money, it is heavy in the rotation, usually always have a bottle on hand.

Glenlivet 12 is my daily driver scotch. Inoffensive, but smooth as hell. I'm not a connoisseur, just want something nice and easy to drink. It's also an easy gateway scotch to get others into it in my experience. Also really like Johnnie Walker Gold. I've tried others, but just keep coming back to those two.

Right?! I do like it a lot.

Btw, what’s the reason why 18 years is so much more expensive than 12 years? Is it because it’s legal age? Lol pardon the joke but I had to. For example, the Macallan 12 years is $60 while the 18 years is $260.

Well the age has a lot to do with it. Time is money . I'm sure that the more enthusiast drinkers can appreciate and enjoy the difference, but I'm just not one of them. Scotch is my preferred drink before anything else, and I always try something new when given the opportunity. But I just keep coming back to Glenlivet 12 and Johnnie Walker Gold.

Give the 15 a try. It's not much more expensive than the 12.

A few friends are Scots. They like to remind me that anything over 12 years old is primarily for export to the US, Japan and China and they prefer the younger, more pronounced flavors for themselves. I tend to agree, older is not better, just more expensive.

Thanks, OP, for starting this thread. It was long overdue. I have relied on Violator for quite some time, he seems to have a lot of knowledge on the subject.

I really like the Green Label. The 15 year aged one and not the island reserve.

My dinner tonight is a salad with prosciutto, Italian olive oil as dressing, some kimchi, and Glenlivet 12 years.

As Salty Dog said, rye whiskey should be spicier than bourbon or other types of whiskeys. Bourbon with high wheat content in the mash bill will be sweeter than others - think Maker's Mark, Larceny, the Weller/Pappy line, Old Fitzgerald, Rebel Yell and anything labeled as being a "wheated" bourbon - 1792's Sweet Wheat variant, Redemption wheated bourbon, etc.

Sugarcane is mostly used for rum and cachaca, from what I know. I believe there are some sugarcane based vodkas, as well, but less common.
