My 3080 doesn't seem to have a problem pushing my 3 1440p monitors. But I'm mostly doing iRacing and such, even though I haven't even done that in a while.
Need to try AC and ACC and see how it handles it. |

I picked one up, the MSI water cooled suprim liquid X. Nice card it’s my cycle to upgrade so I went with this and an i9-13900k, Z790 motherboard and 64GB DDR5 and 4TB WD SN850X drive.
It’s a blazing rig but my last one was still more than adequate- parts are up on ebay for my 3090 and 9900K w/64GB DDR4 if anyone is interested. The 4090 is significantly faster but the problem is there are no games that take advantage of the card, in all my years I never thought hardware would outpace games but it has happened. And I dont think there are any games on the horizon for 2 years that would stress this card. Sadly, no one is innovating everything for the past 5 years uses the same few gMe engines and all of them cap out pretty low on quality. We need equivalent od a new Crysis game or someone to start using Unreal5 engine to its max..which is 2 years out likely. So I am future proof I guess |

I run 4K @ 120 all settings maxed, yes the 4090 keeps me at 120+, but the difference between slightly lower settings of a 3090 is visually negligible and a few FPS drop is also negligible for most games.
The card is definitely close to 2X faster in raw performance but it doesn’t give you 2X better visuals. There is diminishing returns taking effect on today’s game engines. All the power just goes to excessive FPS which is a nice bump for competitive FPS but little else need 350fps What this card really needs are 8K textures, 10x polygon, and character models that don’t walk around like they have sticks up their arse or spin disconnected from the ground instead of walking with real physics and real skeletal motion. I do prefer visuals over FPS. |

I have a 4090 liquid x too. I stayed on the am4 platform though. Picked up a deal on a 5800x3d. Upgrading mb and ram wasn't worth it. Big wins over a 3080- Much higher mins, less hitches I can actually use ray tracing and the shadows are significantly better. When im way over performance I can turn off dlss and get rid of the weird halos around fine objects. VR. The 4090 is the difference between in reprojection all the time and having a liquid smooth experience on a G2. The 3080 was barely 60 in some games at 4k and id have to turn things down. The 4090 just slays everything. |

Here's a video from Gamers Nexus talking about the power connector issue with the 4090s. Seems they are thinking it's the power cable that might be causing the melting/failures. They're asking for people with failures to send them the cable/card and they'll reimburse you for it.

Looks like Reddit has at least 2 reports of RTX 4090 MSI Gaming X Trios that have burnt. Mine is a Gaming X Trio with the 3 8-pin adapter. I keep checking the adapter and card and am not seeing any issues. I play games where the GPU is taxed quite heavily (high 300/425w power draw) and no problems.

At first I thought maybe it might have been due to sub-par manufacturing of the cable itself shipped with the graphics cards, but now OEM ATX 3.0 PSU cables are beginning to show signs of melting as well.
A symptom of having to bend them too much to fit in cases....? Or too much power going through small pins? Not sure. It won't be my problem any time soon; even if I wanted to venture out and buy one, it's sold out everywhere. |

I camped out at a local Micro Center to get my 4090. Was entertaining to chat with the few guys that were out there a few hours early. Luckily, all people in line (about 25-30) got a card. I wondered if there was a point of camping out because there was a rumor of high availability and that Nvidia was stocking them in warehouses to try and sell more of the 30 series. Looks like camping was a good idea if I wanted one on launch.
It is concerning that both the 450w rated cable (3x8pin adapter) and 600w (4x8pin adapter) are burning up alongside the native ATX 3.0 PSU cables. Something is definitely off. I love how Jay from Jayz2Cents was mocked by providers and here we are LOL |

You won't believe this, but my radeon rx 580 is good enough for me. However, I ran into a problem: I bought a Samsung Odyssey G5 monitor and now I can play only at 60 Hz. I will wait until prices fall to buy a new one at 144Hz

Update on this topic: I went ahead and got an Asus 4090 TUF OC edition.
I am surprised on a couple of performance aspects for this card, and one other observation. 1. While my monitor resolution is 3440 x 1440, I didn't expect a huge performance jump over my 3080...but in VR, the difference is very noticeable. 2. This card runs really cool. It idles at around 25C and under high load it never exceeds 47C. I'm running the standard Asus OC profile, which takes the baseline GPU clock of 2565MHz to 2595MHz which is an LOL statistic itself because that's hardly any difference...but getting it closer to 3000MHz will not really produce significant performance gains in any real world needs. Power draw under max load has not exceeded 440 watts so far, either. 3. This card is H~U~G~E! And heavy...I'm glad they provided a GPU support thingy, although my mobo has the re-inforced pci-e slots. I didn't buy this card for regular gaming, but rather for VR to drive the 2160 x 2160 per eye resolution of my HP Reverb G2 at the settings I prefer, especially in DCS, Flight Simulator, and other racing simulations. Is it worth the cost? I think that is subjective, but for me I see a substantial difference in VR performance over my 3080 (10GB version) so for me, it is. If you can afford it, do it. VR will eat every bit of performance you can throw at it. You can run full res with some super sampling.

I, too, came from a 3080 and the performance difference is massive. Everyone was saying that for 1440p that the 4090 was overkill. I still have games I can't achieve a constant 144hz in HDR or 175 non-HDR with max settings and even some without RT or RT audio with my native resolution of 3440x1440. Way too expensive, but the performance uplift is approximately 100% over the 3080.

Im still on an 2080Ti Hydro and running strong at 1440P here. I see no need to upgrade yet. I hardly ever see anything less than 125FPS in the games I play.

Playing games like Returnal, Dead Space Remake, Callisto Protocol, and others with RT and other settings set to max will definitely stress your system. Without my 4090, there is zero chance I would be able to do that and keep a high framerate. My 3080 would have choked badly (3440x1440 native resolution, no DLSS or VRS).

Again though, the 4090 is literally a game changer in VR, especially driving headsets like my HP Reverb G2, or a Pimax 8K for example. |
