It sounds like I will need a psu. Anything I should know? Are they all roughly the same? The guy just said -

"It is highly recommended to purchase power supply from HP, since the dimensions should fit the chassis."

Seems they'd all be somewhat universal, no?

And how hard is replacing a power supply? I've done ram, chips, drives, etc, never a psu..

About once every 20 minutes I get something intelligent out of this guy. He just told me I can't install a psu bigger than 470 watts.. Good to know..

replacing a PSU is a piece of cake!

unless you have an HP, in which case your screwed, because like manufacturers like them they like to shove an elephant into a breadbox

unless its a proprietary PSU it should be the same size as all the others (atx spec, it meens there all the same size and have fans only in XX locations ECT)

would be best to take the side off and measure it though

as for actually chaning it, it can be tough and might require you to actually remove your motherboard or CPU heatsink,

even in a full tower case a lot of the times you have to

Thanks for all your help. I downloaded some new drivers over lunch and installed them, so tonight when I get home I'll see if it's running any better. I have another game I can try as well. Maybe it's just a halo (1), vista conflict or something. Thanks for all of your help today..

If I'm not satisfied, it looks like I will be getting
~geforce 8600 gt (possibly gts) video card,
and ~400 watt psu.

I talked with the it guy here for a few and he said if I'm nervous about the psu at all just bring it in and he'll help me out. I hate pulling/pushing all the connectors onto circuit boards. I've had awful experiences breaking them, bending them, etc..

Thanks again for your help!! I learned a lot today!!

Update -

Pretty much realized that the integrated video card wasn't going to do what I was looking for..

Bought a nvidia 8600 gt video card
Bought a 430 watt power supply

Install of the power supply was a joke. I'm embarassed to have asked about its difficulty. I took one screw off the back to take the side cover off. Marked four cables with blue painters tape as I took them off. Pulled out old power supply. Installed new power supply. Installed four connectors respectively. Done. Maybe took 10 minutes total being slow and careful. And while the old one was out, I installed the video card. Results - incredible. I could not believe it. Night and day difference.

Next day pulled out the video card, and traded up to the nvidia 8800 gts chip. Holy crap. First off, this thing is a monster. They make laptops the size of this thing. If it was bigger in any direction it wouldn't have fit. It is two cards wide and takes up two slots, the entire top is cooling, and it exhausts in the back. 6 pin connector off the psu as well..

Performance - Unreal. I have no clue how to explain it. Every game I owned I have never seen work or look like this. Every graphics option is maxed out. I see every particle, shadow, detail, in every game now. It runs smooth like water. It's like watching a movie. I was naseous within 2 minutes of playing Halo. This is the performance I was looking for. I am extremely, extremely happy with the results and my new computer now..

Not to mention in windows now instead of adjusting for best performance, I now have it adjusted for best appearance. They run just as fast as each other.

I can't wait to get home from work. I have Flight Simulator 2002 that I want to install, and an old joystick as well. I cannot wait to see how that looks. No more turning down the resolution all the way, turning off the effects, details, etc, and still having choppy results.

Damn. So happy with the results of this system. Upgrading made such a huge difference.. :rocks:

Thank you for all your help in this thread, 533..

AHAHAHAHAHA looks like you just found one of the other "speed demons" in you

i actually have the same card as you, its a great card, it covering the other PCI slot is because its top of the line, so they use a much larger heatsink and a larger slower moving fan so noise is reduced to near nothing (theres a folowing of PC builders [like myself] who are aiming for whisper silent systems nowadays)

that cards going to be bottlenecked by your CPU though, and depending on your bios and windows, you may be dedcuting the amount of video ram from your system ram, go into your bios and look for an option like "memmory remapping" but it only works on 64bit vista

anyway heres a few pics of mine

and heres what crazy f-ers like me do to their heatsinks in order to increase cooling effeciency

now return the HP and build your own!:rocks:

Very interesting stuff, very interesting pictures.. Do you eventually throw all of that into a case? And it's out on your desk during assembly/prototyping/build?

Only a few more and I get to go home and play.. Tonight is flight sim 2002 experiment..

really? because intels thermal spec is 71 degrees last time i check 71 was a higher number than 67

and it will NEVER see those temps in real world applications (try 50 -60 degrees)

You are correct. G0 is 71c, B3 is 62.2c. Maybe I was jealous.

I just built a new PC. The specs are:

Antec Solo case
Asus P5K-V Mobo
Core 2 Duo 2.4 ghz
2 GB Corsair RAM
Thermaltake 450 Watt Modular Power Supply (nice for keeping the case clutter free)
500 GB Hard Drives (x2) 1 Tera Byte total storage
Drive 1 is partitioned into 4 drives:
60gb for Vista Home Premium and Software
140gb for music production: samples, loops, etc
60gb for documents, pictures, etc
200gb for Music

Drives 2 is strictly Video

External Hard Drive (x1) 120gb for backup and whatever else

Asus DVD/CD drive
Asus DVD/CD burner with lightscribe
Video Card - XFX Geforce 7300 Nvidia runs 2x 20" flat screens
Audio Card/MIDI interface for music production - Emu 1212M
Case has 2 92mm front fans and 1 120mm rear fan

Bought all parts through New Egg except Video Card (Tiger Direct) and Audio Card (Musicians Friend)

Not one issue with Vista Home Premium I tweaked it and turned off some unnecessary stuff. Runs a home music studio with Ableton Live, Reason 4, and a ton of VST's without a hitch.

Who said you need a MAC?

:rocks:

I haven't over clocked it yet. Haven't had the need too.

Garage List
Looks more impressive than the components inside it right now... Opty 165 @ 2.9GHz. Outdated rig but I haven't had time to get a new setup. Planning on a Q6600 with the usual fixings.

I have an even more outdated setup used for distributed computing, but in a sweet Voodoo Omen case. Dual CPU Intel Xeons 1.6LVs OC'd to ~2.6GHz and all liquid cooled. Don't think I have pics online unfortunately. Setup looks nice, but definitely needs a hardware upgrade.
