I was also going to suggest M5x. I personally love M50's but M52's are equally robust and respond to boost really well.

In this day and age, I wouldn't waste the money on stroking an M20 unless you want to keep the original engine in the car. I have a 2.9L stroker in my E30, I love it, but I did it 20 years ago when M50 swaps were still big bucks. We run a modified M20 Eta enging in our lemons car but it has years trickery and we have full use of a machine shop. Great when three of team members are machinist's and have spares to play with. M20's are becoming increasingly hard to find in certain parts of the country.

I am thinking about an engine for my 2002 and the K24 is on the list. I like M50/52/S50/52 and know them well but it’s a long motor and the 2002 bay is probably shorter than the E30 bay. Mildly turbocharging the M10 with a stand-alone ECU is another possibility.
