Like anything, it falls on the parent to ensure their kids are setup for success. That does not include expecting everyone else to educate or parent them or giving them a trophy for shoing up or telling them they can be anything under the sun. Everyone cannot be a doctor or chemist or astronaut, etc.

Back in my day, middle school health class started teaching us that stuff.

They didn’t really make us go through sex ed until 9th grade which was way too late. I knew of a few kids that already adventured at that point. Hell I remember a girl getting pregnant at the end of the year. I would say first year of middle school is probably the best time, with continued education about why protection is important.
Hell, there was a girl in my HS that had TWO kids before we graduated.

Cannot stress enough that the most important aspect of all this early ed is the 'if you are uncomfortable with ANYTHING that ANYBODY does, come tell us (parents), even if it is a teacher, minister, or our best friend' and add to it a big dose of 'nobody can ever get you in trouble with us' or some version that fits for you. It is pedophile-101 to use emotional blackmail with kids, making them think they will get in trouble if they don't go along, or telling them that it is what they are supposed to do.

As far as the state vs. home thing - relax, they aren't going to brainwash your kid out of the family values/faith. Think back to your own youth, and I bet you were easily able to distinguish between some BS coming from a teacher, and something that was really important to your parents.

Every time I see this thread pop up, I think of Tom Hanks in the movie "Bachelor Party":
Friend: Are you thinking about having kids?
Hanks: I want to adopt a 16 year old korean girl as soon as possible.

They sure try, daily. I was a teacher for 5 years, and I saw it daily. The kids with strong parrents were generally able to sniff out the teacher's BS, but the rest were quickly sucked into the crap.

This is the most important post of the whole thread.

I thought this thread was going to be how their 14 year old got knocked up or something. I’m a little disappointed in the lack of scuttlebutt in here.

The op made it clear we're talking about kids so we are behaving.

This approach is one of the reasons so many kids with questions about their sexual orientation or gender identity literally jump off a cliff or commit suicide some other way.

I know what it's like to be confused. I was very naive as a kid, so I had absolutely no gaydar and it surprised the heck out of me when I found out many of my best friends in high school were gay. They thought it was funny that I was so clueless.

I had never even considered the possibility that I might be gay, but I started wondering. Fortunately, one of my friends reassured me that "If you were, you'd know," so I didn't have to figure that out alone.

The school might have something to teach your daughter that you can't... and I'm not just talking about the difference between THERE and their.

You're lucky if YouTube hasn't taught your kids about about sex before you even considered it.

if youre counting on the state to educate your kid about sex, youre doing it wrong.

probably the best time to do it is when they start showing interest in girls/boys outside of normal friends.

Im always amazed at how early you see kids banging these days, so better to start early than later.

I've begun construction on my daughters tower... It's been delayed by some supply constraints. But, should be ready just in time..

It's more like surprise sex education... One second your kid is looking at my little pony fan videos and some Russian girl riding in her pink Barbie electric toy car the next they're learning about blue waffles.

How long is her hair, just out of curiosity. Probably something you should keep an eye on too.

My first sex ed class was when my friend stole his dads Playboy and brought it to school. I was in grade 2 or 3.

Now with the internet, kids will be watching hardcore porn behind our backs well under 10 years old. I would start teaching them the basics and the outcomes as early as 7-8 years old.
