A funny experience of this was when I was shopping for a new Honda Cr-v for my mom, fully dressed in my work clothes. And no one at the Honda dealer would help me. Legit mad eye contact with so many sales people sitting in the car and no-one said a peep. Maybe its the whole trucar thing or something. But hey, I guess whatever they doing is working since they still have jobs

Porsche released this commercial over a decade ago. They obviously are doing something right.

Porsche is a different brand and experience. Their volume is lower and they have much fewer models. BMW generally carry much higher inventory and their dealership model seems to reflect that. There are far fewer Porsche dealers than there are BMW dealers as well. I suspect salesperson turnover at BMW is higher.
Net result - in my experience Porsche tends to have a more laid back, VIP type experience. When buying my GT4 and 911 Turbo, I probably spent hours talking to my salesperson about everything. BMW is just different. Definitely a cut above the cheap and nasty Toyota/Jeep/etc experience, but not quite at the Porsche level. |

I visit the two BMW dealers in Auckland once each about every 6 weeks to poke around new cars. Everyone at both dealers know me fairly well and often want to chat just to see what I think and have a good chat. They've let me drive just about everything in the range whenever I ask.
However I am in Melbourne, Australia at the moment and spent around 30 minutes in the main BMW dealership here without a single person talking to me. They weren't too impressed when I started playing with things in the 650i GC they had there and I think they were close to asking me to leave. Disclaimer - I look like I'm late 20s and as it was 30C/86F I was wearing tshirt and shorts - they really looked like they were not happy with me even being there.

My stock answer to these threads : there are good and shitty dealers/companies/salespeople/human beings. No marque has a monopoly on either.
We consumers today have two options - find a salesperson and dealer that treats you fairly and well, and give them your repeat business, I.e. buy the seller (and the long term relationship). Trade-off is that you won't always get the best deal off any single transaction Or...treat it like a commodity transaction and the best deal gets your business. And just be prepared for wildly diverging buying experiences each time. Neither approach is wrong! |

Interestingly, to me, my dealership is one of a group of luxury car dealerships owned by the same company (Penske) and the Porsche building is right next to the BMW building. But I have not gone into the Porsche dealership to compare the experience.

Next time you're in the BMW dealership walk next-door and check out the Porsche's.

I have dealt with some really shitty BMW dealerships, but also some good ones.
BMW Northwest. In 2011 I owned an E90 325i which still fit in with the current lineup. They were always remarkeable to me and provided great customer service despite the fact that I was 19. This was all in the service department, not the sales department. I had a longterm issue with the airbag sensor on the passenger seat which was still an issue before the warranty ran out. After the warranty ran out, they still went out of their way to replace it for free! David Quinn was my S/A there. Extremely polite and took time to be personable and address any questions I had. This was easily one of the coolest ways of being introduced to BMW. BMW Bellevue. Great service department, never dealt with sales. BMW Honolulu.... What can I say about this dealership other than they are probably the absolute worst BMW dealership I've ever dealt with in my life. Their sales department completely ignored me every time I shopped there. I'd make eye contact and everything. I'd pull up in my E60 M5 when it was still a rather new car, and still, not a single "Hello" or "Can I assist you with anything today?" People there were rude and condescending as well. Anything you asked for was an inconvenience. The service department was laughable too, not to mention anything you purchased there, the dealer would mark up at the highest 45%!!! Easily the shittiest BMW dealership on the face of the earth. Center BMW. Both sales and parts were very polite. Got my new T/A there for my M3 and I got to see some pretty cool cars. BMW Sioux Falls. Always polite and professional. Any time I've walked in there, I am greeted even I dress kind of like a guy who doesn't look like he would purchase a BMW. Went and test drove a 6MT M3 there recently and they didn't even hesitate to assist me. Their service department sucks though. I paid $275 for an oil change on my M3 right after my road trip from Cali to here and they didn't even provide the usual inspection of the car and needed to be replaced wear and tear items. Hesitant about bringing in my M3 for the recall items. I guess it's hit and miss depending on where you go, but even at some of the above dealerships there were many people who just rubbed me the wrong way. Nooooow. Porsche. That's a funny story. 2011, I went to Porsche of Longbeach and was offered the keys to the new at the time 991 911. The salesman was really trying to get my money even though I had no way of affording the car, I was just having fun playing the part and of course I've always had a long time interest in Porsches. It didn't help that I had nice clothes on and a girlfriend who looked and dressed like a million bucks. Lots of rich kids down in those areas. Porsche of Honolulu.... This is a funny story. I had just gotten done working on selling pharmaceuticals for the day. I was wearing a nice suit. I was a younger but a confident individual. I walk in and I'm standing there for quite some time waiting for someone to assist me because I was waiting to get info on a Cayenne for my wife. Eventually a very flamboyant sales guy walks up to me and completely snubs me. "Well, aren't you dressed to look important." My response: "No. No. Please stop." He doesn't take me seriously when I asked for info on the Cayenne. Eventually gets me a brochure. Escorts me outside after we chatted for a little bit. Sees my E60 M5 outside. Completely changes his tune. He actually starts to realize that he made a mistake. I gave him that look as I unlocked my car. You know, the one where you just want someone to know they fucked up. Hilarious. I spun tires the entire way as I drove past the dealership leaving a cloud of smoke. Lamborghini, Bentley, Aston Martin and McLaren have always been good experiences for me. Always taken seriously. Always asked if there's anything they can do to help or anything I want to see. Polar opposite of how I feel inside a BMW dealership.

Hilarious. I spun tires the entire way as I drove past the dealership leaving a cloud of smoke. I would've gone and found the sales manager of GM of the dealership and told them what an asshat that salesman was, and depending on the treatment I got from him I may have continued to do business with him for the Cayenne, now I am assuming that there wasn't another Porsche dealership in Honolulu. If there was I'd be heading over there to do my business. I had a similar situation with a bank when i was young. I'd just moved to a small town with only one bank, I opened an account and got a credit card etc. I decided to buy a new car back in Toronto but went to the small town bank for the loan. The manager blew me off and treated me like crap. So I called my old banker in Toronto, got the loan over the phone and showed up with my new car the following week to deposit my pay check at the new bank. The idiot bank manager had the balls to ask me where I got the money. That bank has lost an awful lot of business from me over the last 30 years. I still have that credit card account and when ever I get a call from them (they are a major bank in Canada) I decline and tell them the story. The point is customer service is something businesses need to take seriously. |

So, not to sound like I'm bragging, but I am fortunate to have a fair amount of welathy mentors or people I know, mainly in the exotic community. One story is from a buddy of mine. His friend owned a giallo Ferrari Enzo back when they were still new. We will just call him "Andy" for this story. Andy is at a car meet. Andy is helping hold a charity event for sick kids and is trying to get people from this car meet to take part in it. Andy talks to a Ferrari F430 owner to see if he's interested in taking part in this event. Ferrari F430 owner makes some smartass remark but pretty much blows him off saying he doesn't want anything to do with it. Event is over. People are heading back to their cars. Andy is opening up the doors to his Enzo. F430 guy goes running towards the Enzo to talk to Andy. F430 guy instantly starts apologizing saying things along the lines of "I'm sorry." "I didn't know." "I thought you were just some random guy." Andy: "Fuck you. I asked for a small amount of respect and you weren't even willing to give me that. I don't want to have anything to do with you." Second story. I have a friend in Bev Hills who is hilarious. He never wears shoes. Is tatted from head to toe. Wears wife beaters on a daily. He too had a yellow Enzo. Pulled up to a car meet in Cali. Tinted windows. Gets out of the Enzo. Everyone is staring at him like "Who the fuck is this guy?" I hung out with said buddy. Saw how people in public treated him. Guy owns 2 Diablo GTR's, a facotry miles Countach, Aventador SV, Bentleys, Rolls, etc. Laughed when people looked down on him. He really changed my perspective on how I view and talk to people around me, even though I've never been a real judgemental person.

The real rub of the matter is that you're trying to have a great experience around cars that you love while some ass hat who is working on a Saturday that took a draw last month to pay off his credit card is so upset at his situation that he brings it into work and takes it out on you. I've walked the fuck out of more dealerships than I care to count. At the end of the day I get to enjoy the rest of my Saturday while they're working until 7PM and then doing it all over again next week. |

Same company also has Mercedes, Lamborghini, Ferrari, Bentley, Land Rover, Jaguar and Audi. Given the same location, and the same ownership, I wonder how different the treatment is from dealership to dealership. I have been satisfied with my BMW dealership experience so far. The sales person was helpful and worked with me to order exactly what I wanted. The Service Manager assisted me in getting BMW to buy back my 330e and graciously waited for my ordered 530e to arrive before completing the buy back. I have always been offered a loaner whenever my car is in for service. The dealership did recently change from a free loaner (with a requirement that the car be returned with full gas) to one for $20 (one time charge and one does not have to refill the gas tank and it also covers windshield damage). Not sure how that works out for me but the convenience is worth it to me. |

I think what most people want is someone who just knows about cars or at least interested in selling them....not a CA who stares at you like you got three heads when you ask how to park a DCT F8X.....hopefully, you find some good CA. At least we got these fourms, the amount of knowledge on here bmw or not is vast and you can learn a lot. Maybe if a CA spent 30% the time I do on BP; his sales numbers would be through the roof!
Some people just suck at basic sales; I learned this in fucking best buy at the age of 16. What brings you in today? How hard is that to ask. Worst answer--> Just looking...Okay bye. At least you attempted to engage. I'll admit to judging customers even in best buy(guy is going to buy 10 $200 dollar laptops and send them to mexico) but hey I wasn't commissioned. I can't speak on the turnover rate, as I have only had my license for 10 years, but it seems new people everyday magmenet down at every single dealer I go to. car salesman like batman trying to get out of the well...that deep in the bucket |

I sold cars for a short while and I was told they don't buy the dealership or car but they buy the salesman. Make the experience worth it to the customer and they will more then likely come back and buy the car from you (if they were serious in the first place). I worked at Porsche of Manhattan in a different capacity doing their marketing and digital work. I would say they were on the lower end of customer satisfaction for Porsche (and they owned Lambo, Bentley, Rolls, Bugatti marquees also). It's all about owner/GM on down to Sales managers and sales reps to how someone will be treated. If the atmosphere is good at the dealer then it will be a good experience. If the place is slightly dirty and no one pays attention to you then the opposite will be the norm. |
