In the US, most welcome centers at the state borders are a good place to plan a quick stop.

Not sure about the current pandemic times, but even last year I found them to be clean & in good working condition, by far better than the public rest rooms here in Germany.
On the other hand, German restrooms that do charge you are really good and were well maintained even during the Covid restrictions.

Safe travels!

You pay to use a restroom in certain locations?

How much?

I thought the purpose of a public restroom was to stop people pissing and shitting anywhere you want. The second you charge for them it seems counter intuitive. Unless they are right next to each other and you can choose to pay for a nicer experience...even then...

Yep - i've been to countries where (public) restrooms are rated by stars similar to hotels. You can go to the crappy 1-star restroom for free or pay a buck or two for a 5 star restroom that has a person handing out towels and stalls are cleaned after each use.

Use EZ-PASS and get out of the city (DC or Maryland for that matter) as fast as possible. Use the HOV lane if you can. Once outside there's plenty of decent rest stop. Don't ever drive a manual transmission on I-95 either. I had a horrible experience. It was tiring to say the least. Avoid rush hour at all cost. Better yet avoid I-95 altogether!

I usually take I-81 when going south from NY State, but tried the Chesapeake Bay Bridge/Tunnel two years ago during the holidays and it was a pleasant alternative in the off-season and something that I would definitely do again when the beaches are empty.....

We have public restrooms, they are disgusting. Something where Germany doesn't live up to it's expectation. They are serviced once a day or less, so I wouldn't use them.

For some rest stops and gas stations, the rest rooms are priced at 0,70 EUR - but with it comes a 0,50 EUR voucher for drinks / coffee etc.

This! The road is realtime evidence of how abysmal driver education is in the US. As are the rest of the interstates for that matter.

I-81 is realtime evidence of how out of control semi tractor trailer rigs are in the US.

Really people. You drive BMWs. Find more pleasant roads.

My BMW doesn't go further than 50 miles from home. That's why I have a road trip vehicle, that gets 650+ miles on a tank of fuel and has a ram bar on front to plow a path through traffic.....
