Instead of the M division doing a real supercar as a flagship, they will do a 25 special editions with painted headrests and an extra set of badges for an extra 20000€.

Could this be why requests for Laguna Seca Blue on the G80/G82 have been denied?

Doubtful. The designers have already said making retro styled cars (such as the 3.0 Hommage Concept) is a sign of brand weakness/being lost, so that won't happen, and the M Vision Concept which is really just an i8 with an extra cylinder, seems to always be on again off again, with its current status being off. BMW sadly won't let M build a true sports car/flagship vehicle, they would much prefer M to build an X8M.

They'll use that year to pre-package bunch of unique 50th anniversary interior/exterior colors for a huge premium, along with 50 stickers and miniscule changes in performance

Wouldn't surprise me if the rumored X8M is released towards the end of March 2023 with the rumored hybrid engine to celebrate 50 years. BMW M had this billboard at the Ring celebrating 40 years.

Well I'm excited for this...but then I did remember what BMW gave us for their 100 years.
Birth of the beaver.

If you went back 10 years and said the future M3 is going to be 4K lbs, AWD, torque converter, nose-heavy, with in-your-face styling and likely numb steering, I think almost everyone would agree it does not fit the M3 nameplate. I think the slow drip of info has made people not realize how much of a deviation it is.
I'm not saying it's a bad car or won't drive well by any means - I'm sure it'll be great. But objectively it has a very different design ethos. I believe the primary motivation for the change is cost savings while chasing 0 - 60 times. It'd be really interesting to see a survey of how many E46 owners are interested in the G8X compared to old gen owners of 911 or Wranglers and their interest in respective current gen models. I believe those models have done a better job of making progress without deviating from what they represent. Regardless, excited to see the reviews and eventually drive one for myself. |

An oldie but goodie comparo from R&T 7 years ago...
https://www.roadandtrack.com/car-cul...roup-a-bmw-m3/ I'm not suggesting that BMW bring back the E30, E36 or E46, but I enjoy driving my naturally-aspirated, S54-equipped, 2004 M3 much more than today's bigger, heavier, turbocharged, automatic M3/M4. In stark contrast, Porsche is still developing and producing AMAZING naturally aspirated engines, as well as AMAZING manual gearboxes for its GT cars.

BMW had a chance to make some 2002's back in 02 and did not. Thought that would be a great way to do an homage but they skipped it.
It's going to be a few badged cars in my opinion with some toys and maybe few extra hp/tq. |

As long as it's not a 4cyl hybrid engine like the new AMG C 63, it should sell

All the people complaining are stuck in the past (not saying it's a bad thing) but the truth is sticks have been dying for years, small fraction of sales are manual transmission now, sports cars and super cars. Gas engines are next to die and it's coming quicker than people think. Look at Mercedes, Audi and Porsche will be next and I bet BMW is last to fall of the Europeans. Jaguar and Volvo already said they are going all electric sooner than later. Point is enjoy cars like the G80 while we still have them because it's not going to get any better than this generation for combustion engine and option of a manual transmission. Get over the grill, Or go buy an Inline 4 C63 Imagine the full electric M3 with a 1 speed transmission, people on these forums are going to lose their minds. |
