The kid did the work necessary to get a 4.68 GPA, got into 20 colleges and yet his efforts are being derided. His success can't be due to the work he put in, it must be affirmative action. WTF more does the kid have to do to deserve to be admitted to these schools? I'm sure some will say there was absolutely no prejudice in that post whatsoever.

I’m not saying the kid did or didn’t deserve to get in
But 4.68 is not that impressive I was lazy top 15% of my class and had a 4.39 Colleges looks for a lot more now Extra curriculars, clubs, volunteering Basically the kid had to kiss a whole lot of teachers asses and do irrelevant shit to get into those schools, haven’t looked at the story but a 4.68 by itself is not enough that being said Affirmative action is bullshit and I’m hispanic. Things should be earned on merit not race or skin color, and yeah maybe sometimes the world is unfair but thats life. The left can’t accept that life is just unfair sometimes and will never be perfect, and the right can’t understand that life is unfair sometimes, and really ins’t always perfect/equal |

When I was applying to colleges and scholarship programs GPA was just something they had to check off. All anyone really cared about was ACT/SAT scores. I spent quite a few sunday afternoons with a tutor trying to get 2 more points to get a scholarship to the school I really wanted to go to.

First it is games schools are playing with the grades, how do you I know that, because some schools give AP classes a higher point value for each grade level and it not standard across the country. When I was in high school AP and regular class all had the same point value. At some point school started changing this. My kids high school gave 90% a 4 and 100% a 5 in a AP class, regular classes got 3.5 for 90% and 4 for 100%, so in my kids school if you did not take AP classes and were a start A student (90%) your GPA could be a 3.5. They did this to force more kids into AP classes which made the school look better to colleges.
Here is the best part of all this, we know a number kids who took all these AP classes had great GPA goes into their preferred University, and with in a year they were back home could not hack college and end up at the local community college. Most of these kids who have the brains to deal with all these college level course do not have the social and maturity to live in the real world. |

How so? I didn't do anything in HS. I was quite the trouble maker as well. I would be surprised if I had much over a 3.0 when I graduated. Got into a college and graduated that without a ton of effort either. GPAs are a stupid metric.

Since I didn't give a f, I didn't get into the college I was capable of. Missed out on the networking aspect of the big name colleges.

That makes sense, and it is a much bigger deal for some industries (not as much my own).

As a student graduating in less than two weeks now I can say that GPA does matter, to a point.
I was a 4.0 GPA student (No AP classes offered) in high school, 3.99 for my associates, and now a 3.85 for my BBA in Marketing. What matters more though, at least from what I have learned, is experience. The classroom is not the workplace and the skills I have learned through my internship have been more valuable than any class. |

Come back when you have some management experience and understand exactly what people look for when narrowing candidate resumes and interviewing.

I don't have any management experience, but all of my managers have told me over and over that experience outweighs any form of education. Your degree gets you in the door while your performance determines how long you stay. |

That kid also got 1560 on his SATs....that's combo is impressive. I think anyone would have got into all of those schools but not necessarily the full ride.

High achieving affluent Asian Americans with his scores would most certainly not get into places like Harvard, Yale, Princeton, Stanford, MIT with similar stats.

Free rides and hoopla to nab the kid that knows nothing of life but was the biggest bookworm, yet no mention of how the education system churns out millions who live the rat race struggling to pay off their student loans for the next 20 years.
