I've driven an exige before so I'm well aware of what it offers. But it hasn't been in production for several years (unless you consider ultra-rare special editions). But for production cars, lotus doesn't make anything south of 3k lbs.... does that mean they no longer qualify as a sports car maker? BTW they're also coming out with an SUV. The reason the definition of a "sports car" is fluid is because the industry itself is changing. If you want to maintain a hard line on what a sports car is, then that's certainly your prerogative. But you're essentially saying typical sports car manufacturers like Ferrari and Mclaren no longer offer sports cars because their road cars weigh significantly more than cars from many years ago.

The whole premise behind all this is because of the comment "I remember when BMW made sports cars". IF they did at one point then they sure as hell do now as well. But if they never did, then it's a moot point anyway.

That's correct.

And? Purity is purity, no matter how muddy you make the water.

Ferrari, nor McLaren make Sports Cars. They make GT/Race cars.

They never did, and they never will. They were, and will always be some sort of GT Car.

What's your cutoff for weight to qualify for a sports car? Sounds like some gatekeeping going on here

Under 3,000 lbs for sure...full of fluids.

Examples:

S2000 - 2800 lbs
Miata - 2400 lbs
Elise/Exige - 2000 lbs

And yes, true Sports Cars are a dying breed, just like humanity.

And looking at your signature, it's no wonder you don't know the definition of a Sports Car. You've never had one. You certainly like your luxury!

eh, I've never had one (one being your definition of sports car) because I've never been able to afford one. I'm now in a position to afford one and can't justify it with 2 young children. But don't let that fool you into thinking I haven't had significant seat time in lightweight cars. I grew up poor and my car history in my signature is a reminder to myself that I've worked hard to get to where I am now.

BTW the old Z3 meets your criteria for sports car
