WeatherUnderground is losing it. It's a beautiful, sunny day out there. What's with this?

The weather people are calling it a "Pedigree Blue Moon" that's happening on the 30/31st. From the saying "once in a blue moon"...

Copied from the site:

In any given calendar year, there are typically 12 Full Moons — one occurring in each month. Every once in awhile, though, due to the exact timing of when the Full Moons occur, we get an extra one. That means we have a total of 13 Full Moons for the year, one during each of 11 months, and one month with two.

Since we only have 12 popular names for the Full Moons, the extra one goes nameless. Thus we call it a Blue Moon.

Weather Underground lost it when Dr. Masters sold out to a certain nameless cable TV channel. As the saying goes in hobby weather station circles, it's not you...it's WU.

I was a WU user for over 30 years dating back to their days operating as a "hidden" telnet server at U-Michigan, and my paying customer number was in the low 100's when they offered annual subscriptions. With IBM owning them now, I don't even have the app installed or use their web site any more.

FYI, the above-mentioned web site took the name of a 1960's domestic terror group that was also based at U-Michigan.....

Rain! After our little sprinkle last week, we're getting honest-to-goodness rain this afternoon. The forecast is for more of the same over the next two days. This should greatly reduce the wildfire danger -- and help firefighters control the present wildfires.

After two nice days (in a row...) it looks like Hurricane Franklin's outer edge is going to dump on us shortly

Had a good heavy rain come through last night and a bit of drizzle this morning. Early morning these last couple weeks have been in the 50s (~13C), great to sleep with the windows open.

Supposed to be sunny for the rest of the week over here. Next week will be creeping back up to the high 80s (~30C) for a few days. Hopefully none of that hurricane nonsense comes this far west.

Summers along this part of the coast if you're close to the beach generally go like this:

06 - June Gloom
07 - No-Sky July
08 - Fogust

That said, if it is overcast in the morning most days you get a few hours of sunshine at least in the early afternoon. And, in my neighborhood, you literally only have to go a mile or so inland and it's sunny most of the day. Even in the fog it's not so bad, though. Temps are always around 65, no wind. And no rain from Apr-Nov. Which is nice - you never have to worry about your Saturday plans getting interrupted - though my water bill for July-Oct is horrendous.

Could be a lot worse, to be honest. And it's not always foggy. (Well, except in Monterey. There it is always foggy in the summer.) Last night we ate dinner out on the patio and sat and talked til 9:30, with the umbrella heater on low. And the super-blue-moonset at the beach this morning was something, for sure.

But it is backwards. Cool in the summer. Then, just about the time most of you are digging out your jackets our summer starts. Sept-Nov are the most glorious months here; and our warmest. It's really our summer. Then we get a few months of periodic rain and a few months of spring before the skies turn grey again. Having grown up in the midwest I'll never find it "normal", but it doesn't suck.

According to the NYC TV news talking heads, some people in the audience of last night's Smashing Pumpkins concert at the Jones Beach Amphitheatre on the south shore of Lawn Guyland were standing in shin-deep water from excessively high tides caused by Hurricane Franklin and the super blue full moon. No reports of flooding in the swamps of Jersey at Bruce Springsteen's Giants Stadium concert.

Here in the woods, our low last night was 54 F, with highs today forecast for the low 70's F. The highs will be slowly creeping up through the holiday weekend, with a possibility of a heat wave (three days of 90+ F highs) early next week.

Note that NYC did not record one single 90+ F day for the entire month of August, and today's forecasted high for the last day of the month will not threaten that streak.....

67, mostly cloudy, 92%. Got a severe fog weather alert this morning, couldn't find said fog.

Heading for Temecula area tomorrow, should be close to 100

Cool down today and most of next week. Mid to upper 80s. Fall will be here soon. Relief is in sight.

I so wanted to believe earlier this week that was coming our way, too. I can live with the coming temps, but the dewpoint is going back up to 70° from the very pleasant 55° of the past few days. Oh well, it will cool off at some point.

I dunno about you, but I'm OK with skipping winter this year.

Supposed to be a snowy and cold start to the winter, but the almanac isn't always right.

Here's ours for the next few days. Might even see a little rain tonight.

Labor Day is looking good as far as the heat goes, albeit a little cloudy.

Yeah, I could live with that!

Below is the expected effect of the coming El Niño as shown in the current issue of The Economist. It looks like Ontario will generally be unaffected, while down here in Ohio we should expect less precipitation from December through March.

It's surprising the rain your wider region is receiving. I was looking a images of flooding in Las Vegas earlier today.

Yeah, there was some flooding nearby here as well but it was mostly in the burn areas.
