I like .40 but that is the uncommon opinion. 9mm is easier for new shooters as the recoilvis light while .40 is snappy

9mm definitely for a new shooter. Also 9mm ammo is much more available and cheaper (at least here in Canuckistan) Also, the argument was/is that .40 has more stopping power. The debate on that rages on and I'm not going to take sides on which round is better, but I'd say 9mm has disabled way more than .40 based on popularity and it's really about shot placement. So if you can hit the target more frequently and accurately with 9mm then it doesn't really matter which round has superior stopping power does it.

Also going to disagree that 9mm has disabled more people. It is the more commonly used round by police who tend to get in more shoot outs than the typical civilian. That said however i agree shot placement is more important than stopping power. .40 does offer better barrier penetration due to it being a heavier round but still traveling at similar high velocity. That said though you cant go wrong with either but if youre considering a .40 rent one from a gun range first. No point in buying it if you wont enjoy shooting it and therefore never go to the range and practice.

Fast forward many years, 9mm is so widespread that I ended up choosing it just because it's fairly ubiquitous while .40 is still more specialized. Other than practicing at the range, my intent for owning a gun is protection when I can't rely on local/state/fed gov't to maintain control and in those scenarios, who knows how much stockpiled ammo is enough. I don't want to be carrying something that the guy down the street doesn't have rounds for if came to that. I've also been looking at getting the Ruger PC Carbine in 9mm since it takes the same rounds/magazines as my Glock. Not saying I wouldn't pick up a .40 or other gun chambered in another caliber, but focused on getting some versatility at the core before I branch out into more calibers for hobby. CCW isn't an option where I live, so not even a consideration FWIW. |

JP just started making their Supermatch barrels in 8" length. I'd so be buying/building one if NJ's systematic 2A injustices didn't lock people up for owning an AR-style pistol.

As far as your concern about finding ammo in a scavenging scenario. Remember that most police force are issued .40 and they will typically have a greater stock pile than most civilians. You can also purchase a separate barrel that will convert a .40 into a 9mm however you cannot convert a 9mm to a .40

Regarding scavenging, it's a mix across most of the big city departments and its been trending back towards 9mm. Some are standardized on 9mm and those that are .40 standard issue usually allow for 9mm options as well. https://www.tactical-life.com/firear...lice-sidearms/ |

Most departments in my area are all switching to 9mm. There's a few departments left that issue .40 or .45 still but they plan on switching back to 9mm the next time they buy guns. I know my department is switching to 9mm after 05/04/2023 or 05/04/2031 (I can retire in 2023 but I might stay till 2031).
These are the calibers from my department since inception 1950-1995 - 357 magnum in some type of S&W revolver 1995-2002 - .40s&w in a S&W 4046 (I started with this in 1998) 2002-2008 - .40s&w in a Glock 22 2008-2018 - gen3 Glock 31 in 357SIG (I took over and switched us to this because I got tired of buying my own ammo) 2018-2031? - gen4 Glock 31 in 357SIG w/Trijicon RMR |

This is what I did, I picked up a 9mm barrel and Glock 19 mags for my Glock 22, I may grab a .357sig barrel for it next as you can use the .40 mags for .357. I love the versatility. |
