I initially took it as a reference to Porsche’s internal successor to the 997, although I think it may actually be a reference to the Ducati 998 motorcycle given how fast the ‘vette is. Either way, it is obviously tongue in cheek as the ‘vette wouldn’t easily be confused with either.

Slight to Porsche in a how I take it. Makes sense given the capability of the Vette in well trained hands.

I definitely think it's a random license plate. There is no Porsche 998... And I definitely don't think it's got anything to do with an old Ducati... that would just be super weird and random.

Since I’m not a gamer, I never would have thought to look there; but I think you’re correct.

It seems 998 was used casually for many automotive and motorcycle things, including the successor to the 997. Porsche dropped using it and it was never official; I suspect the copyright was too hard to untangle.
