Don't ever de-claw; it is literally amputating the last joint, very painful and damaging. Your vet sounds like one of many who oppose it or try to avoid doing it. If you trim nails routinely and give them s/t they like to scratch, like those cardboard flats, or a rope-log they won't be as destructive. I can't imagine those stick-on's will stay for long, but who knows.

Plastidip?

Kidding. I see you found the link. I've heard of those as well but don't know anyone who has tried them. Report back and let us know how they work/hold up.

I've been fortunate with Hamilton; he doesn't claw anything other than my hand lightly when he snuggles up next to me at night. Now the continual shedding of hair and his disdain of the brush, who is not his friend, is a completely different story. having to lint roll myself and everything in the house constantly gets old. He'll get his summertime haircut soon and look like Aslan again.

Try a 'Zoom Groom' from Petsmart - our gals LOVE it, and hate brushes or combs (and those don't work nearly as well). It is a kind of rubber grooming thing with 'fingers' that look like crayon tips.

I'll look into it. Appreciate that. I've tried everything amazon has to offer, even the brushes that mount to corners for them to rub against on their own. We've had some pretty interesting experiences with him and hair management. I bought one of those mitts with the small soft rubber nibs once and tried it. The end result was a 22 pound cat grabbing ahold of it, while my hand was still in it, pulling his own body weight up and proceeded to destroy my left arm from the wrist to elbow. He's way more gentle now and will simply walk away, but if I persist and follow him the Mr. Hyde side of him comes out mighty fast.

I took him to a groomer 2 years ago to have him shaved like a lion. It was awesome and hilarious. He was the last cat that the groomer ever trimmed. I felt so terrible for her when I picked him up. She looked like she had been physically assaulted with barbed wire and broken glass. I asked her to groom him last year and received an "absolutely not!" That's when she told me that he was the last cat that she would ever groom.

My wife has used them before. Like mentioned on here, the trick is getting them on and doing it securely. With ours, he's about as laid back as they come and she had no problem getting them to adhere.

She only had to use them for a little while and he eventually grew out of scratching at everything. Give him something with a little catnip on it that he can sharpen his claws on, and now he is content with it.

But as I mentioned, he is very laid back. I could see someone having a few issues getting those nail caps on a more energetic cat that is stubborn!

Watched a bunch of YouTube videos and it looks pretty easy to put on. It's like a chick getting a manicure lol! So from many people who uses them no complaints other than they now get to buy expensive furniture again which is why I need to give this a try

I always tell my dog that I love him $1,000 worth. He costs me anything over that, he dies. He seems to love me anyways.

Secretly though, I couldn't put him down for $1K. But if its a medical thing where his quality of life is going to be worse off, then I probably could.

Ok, have to ask... Is that a little refrigerator on the table beside the couch thingy? Cold beers in there?

Maybe it's just me but the other end of the couch looks empty... small beer fridge to match the wine fridge? Then everyone is happy!

If you tell him you'll kill for $1,000 he might suspect your quality of life has sunk and take his measures for he loves you so much.

There should be cheaper similar (dedicated) scratching posts (or even better for the purpose - your cats' viewpoint!) available. Just get them one. Distract them from what they shouldn't touch by offering a better option (for both you and them). Or, maybe, just cover this part of the furniture item with something protective they can scratch as they like. That's provided their reason is claws care, not they just hate this piece and try to destroy it deliberately: "Cats. They know something we just don't.".
