Not enough power? Here is the Toyota GT86 swapping out its NA 2.0l H4 (4U-GSE) and getting the NA 5.0l V8 (2UR-GSE) from the Lexus IS-F installed.

Well, that will certainly fix things! I assume it will raise the Cg more than a bit and probably move the weight balance forward, but it should also still be behind the suspension. Too bad they'll never produce it.

I know. I assume the artist either doesn't know it has an aluminium hood or doesn't know aluminium doesn't rust. Not like the E30 Ratstyle.

Subaru BRZ STI planned
A hot version of the Subaru BRZ is in development, Auto Express has learned

Subaru has given the biggest hint yet that it is developing a hot STI version of its BRZ sports car – and there's a roadster on the way too.

Talking to Auto Express at the launch of the new rear-wheel drive coupe, global marketing manager Atoshi Atake, said: "We have already had many requests from interested customers regarding a faster version. Let me say this - we will certainly satisfy our customers. We are already working on a faster version."

The new range-topping model is expected to take inspiration from the STI concept revealed at the 2011 Los Angeles Motor Show. Under the bonnet will be a more powerful version of the 197bhp 2.0-litre flat-four cylinder 'boxer' from the standard car.

It is likely to produce around 250bhp. "We can definitely develop the intake system," Atake said. "There is certainly room for improvement there." In addition, there is likely to be a freer-flowing exhaust and modifications to the engine's variable valve control system, along with an even higher rev limit of around 7,500rpm.

Subaru says that it will not turbocharge the engine as there is no space at the front of the engine bay for an intercooler. "Plus, we want to keep turbocharging separate. It is for models like the WRX STI," said Atake. "The same goes for four-wheel drive. We could not make the BRZ four-wheel drive even if we wanted to." He also said that supercharging had been dismissed because it would make the BRZ too heavy on fuel.

As well as more power, the BRZ STI is set to weigh even less than the 1,250kg standard car, thanks to racing bucket seats and potentially a carbonfibre roof and bonnet, which will further help to lower the car's centre of gravity. Other tweaks will include a dramatic bodykit, stiffened and lowered suspension, lighter but larger 18-inch alloy wheels and upgraded brakes.

When asked if it was possible to make a convertible version of the BRZ, Atake said: "Yes, that is certainly possible. We already have pillarless doors - you can imagine how removing the roof would make the car look."

Subaru and Toyota have a global sales target of 100,000 models per year for the BRZ, and its sister car, the GT 86. Both cars go on sale in the UK in June, but sales have already begun in Japan where Subaru has sold 3,551 models in the last two months - four times what it expected.

Interesting Subie said no turbo for the Sti version, no room for intercooler. That is disappointing.

Nothing wrong with n/a. If they can get 250hp out of it, and have it rev over 7k, I'll buy one.

Please take note ONLY on what is quoted from Subaru's marketing manager Atoshi Atake:

Quote:
"We have already had many requests from interested customers regarding a faster version. Let me say this - we will certainly satisfy our customers. We are already working on a faster version."

"We can definitely develop the intake system"

"There is certainly room for improvement there."

"The same goes for four-wheel drive. We could not make the BRZ four-wheel drive even if we wanted to."
So, it seems fair to assume that Subaru won't be turbocharging the BRZ because they don't want to!

Then we have Autoexpress' own interpretation without any 'official' quotes:

Quote:

It is likely to produce around 250bhp.

In addition, there is likely to be a freer-flowing exhaust and modifications to the engine's variable valve control system, along with an even higher rev limit of around 7,500rpm.

Subaru says that it will not turbocharge the engine as there is no space at the front of the engine bay for an intercooler.

He also said that supercharging had been dismissed because it would make the BRZ too heavy on fuel.

And, it's those last two sentences that I would like to address...

1)
Quote:
Subaru says that it will not turbocharge the engine as there is no space at the front of the engine bay for an intercooler.
Subaru don't use FMICs, they NORMALLY use TMICs with their characteristic hood scoop instead, so why would they care about the space at the front of the engine for an intercooler?! Additionally, the picture you've just posted shows a supercharged Toyobaru with a FMIC. Nice sound BTW:

Well, compared to turbocharging the supercharged 2010 Audi S4 3.0 TFSI (quattro AWD) tells us otherwise. We can compare my BMW 1M twin-turbo to the supercharged Audi S4 (6-speed manual):

Engine Output:

1M................................................ ....... S4
335hp @ 5900 RPM................................ 333hp @ 5500-7000 RPM
332 lb-ft.* @ 1500-4500 RPM.................. 325 lb-ft. @ 2900-5300 RPM

*An additional 37 lb-ft of temporary torque is delivered with the standard turbo boost function.

Unladen Weight:

1M.................. S4
3362 lbs........... 3847 lbs

Fuel Economy:

1M.................. S4
19 MPG............. 18 MPG (city)
26 MPG............. 27 MPG (highway)

Ok, my 1M managed an average of 14 MPG for a complete gas tank as its best with the help of the cruise control (set to 112mph) and the M button OFF only in highways!

Back to the comparison...

Gear ratios: 1M.................. S4
1st............ 4.11............... 3.667
2nd........... 2.315.............. 2.158
3rd........... 1.542............... 1.520
4th........... 1.179............... 1.133
5th........... 1.000............... 0.919
6th........... 0.846............... 0.778
Final drive 3.154............... 3.682

Both engines deliver practically the same power output from a 3.0L 6-cylinder engine and despite the Audi's weight disadvantage (485 lbs.), the additional friction losses of the AWD system and a significantly shorter final drive ratio it manages to achieve the same fuel mileage as the 1M!!!

Impressed with the 1M V8 (M3 engine transplant) from Egypt?! What about this Toyobaru with the IS-F V8 engine from Japan?!

Why the Toyota GT86 is so important

Quote:
Apr 05 2012

Steve Sutcliffe

The Toyota GT86 matters because it is quintessentially a car designed to appeal to the common man (and, of course, to the common woman). Although it may not be bargain basement cheap, it is nevertheless affordable compared with many of the cars we drive. And compared with most bona fide sports cars it is nothing less than the bargain of the century.

It is in other words not merely another exotic, esoteric, expensive machine, designed only for the very wealthy to enjoy. It costs just £24,995 – about the same as a well-specified family hatchback – has just 197bhp – ditto – yet in reality can deliver a driving experience that’s up there beside the very best.

From the way its steers to the way it stops, and even more so the way it slices so cleanly into and out of corners, the GT86 is every inch as much fun to drive as a Porsche costing four times as much. You emerge from its neatly designed cabin wearing just as big a smile as you would do having just driven a Maserati.

In its way, the GT86 is probably MORE invigorating to drive than its vastly pricier competition because you don’t expect so much from it in the first place. It’s like New Year’s Eve syndrome, that one night of the year from which expect so very much, yet all too often get so very little. In that context, the GT86 is like a chance meeting with friends that just seems to work somehow; such rare occasions are often the ones you remember most fondly.

What’s also important is that this car emanates not from a small British sports car company, or even from a manufacturer such as Porsche, but Toyota. All conquering, all powerful Toyota.

That a business as vast and profitable as this has produced a machine as nimble and clear focused as the GT86 is, whichever way you look at it, pretty extraordinary. That it has done so while collaborating with a rival company, ie Subaru, is even more unusual in this day and age.

Let’s hope both of them pave the way for a simpler, cheaper, less complex breed of car for the future – one that most of us, and not just the very well off, can enjoy. Think of it as the perfect antithesis of the Bugatti Veyron that ends up sitting in an air-conditioned museum, never having turned a wheel, being glimpsed at just occasionally, by invitation only from its anonymous owner. Now do you see why this car really means something?

"Environmental pressures mean naturally aspirated engines are rapidly being superseded by other engine architectures and technologies."

This is the sole reason why a NA 'hot' version of the Toyobaru's engine that actually means something performance-wise IS so unlikely!

True to be told, the Toybaru doesn't really need more top power it needs more low to mid range grunt, which is to say torque if the goal is higher performance while at the same time increasing the FUN factor at sensible speeds - the ones that most of us can really enjoy. That's why FI is mandatory!

Then, with higher torque comes the added benefit of using taller gears for good fuel economy and emissions without significantly compromising performance.

Look at what just happened to Honda and their 4-cylinder K20 engine... it failed to meet upcoming emissions regulations and around the end of 2010 Honda finished its mass production - first the higher rated version (222 hp) for the Japanese market and then the less powerful (198 hp) European version.

Why is this example important?! Because of the numbers involved...

Honda K20 (Japanese market) :
  • Bore: 86 mm
  • Stroke: 86 mm
  • Displacement : 1,998 cc (121.9 cu in)
  • Compression : 11.7:1
  • Power: 222 hp (165 kW) @ 8000 rpm
  • Torque: 159 lb·ft (215 N·m) @ 6100 rpm
  • Redline: 8400 rpm

Honda K20 (European version) :
  • Bore: 86 mm
  • Stroke: 86 mm
  • Displacement : 1,998 cc (121.9 cu in)
  • Compression : 11.0:1
  • Power: 198 hp (148 kW) @ 7800 rpm
  • Torque: 142 lb·ft (193 N·m) @ 5600 rpm
  • Redline: 8000 rpm
  • Fuel Cutoff: 8200 rpm

Subaru FA20:
  • Bore: 86 mm
  • Stroke: 86 mm
  • Displacement: 1,998 cc
  • Compression Ratio: 12.5:1
  • Power: 197 hp (147 kW) at 7,000 RPM
  • Torque: 151 lb·ft (205 N·m) at 6,400-6,600 RPM
  • Redline: 7400 rpm

So, what is left for the Subaru's FA20 engine to gain without compromising emissions requirements?!

Yes, there's the direct injection advantage which allowed the engineers to raise compression to 12.5:1... but how much higher does the engine need to rev to gain ONLY 24 hp and at what cost?! And, what about the mid-range torque where the engine is clearly lacking?! Would they use even closer ratios?! Then, what about the stringent emissions regulations?!

I'm sorry to say but... low displacement, high-revving NA engines do NOT make sense anymore. If Honda says so (who else?!)... I do believe!

This Subaru FA20 is as good as it gets for a naturally aspirated 2.0L engine capable of fulfilling future emissions standards... the problem is, performance wise it's NOT better than the equally powerful Honda K20 of 5 years ago... only cleaner!

Am I crazy to feel wanting to sell my 135i to buy this thing? If it isn't for how much money I'd lose to do this, I'd so buy this car.

I don't understand why all these complaint with low hp/torque. Find me a car that is FR with more HP that costs within 10% of this thing. Do we even know the 0-60 number of this thing?

If you are saying that money is no object, then look else-where. By all means buy a Cayman R. This thing is simply not for you.
