Of course if I really wanted a quality shot here I would have used a faster lens and much lower ISO. Still, as a quick experiment I'm pretty happy with the results.

Nice shot, Matt. We don't have any with the blue in them. Ours are all yellow and red/yellow.

For those of us shooting in RAW, "expose right" with the histogram as far to the right as you can get without blowing out highlights. Looking at your cat, the white on the face would define the limit to how much +EV you could apply and still have a great looking cat. (The BG would be another issue and you might blow it out, like I did with my GBH). Even without heavy NR, you do lose detail as you raise the ISO, but I find that I'm better off, generally, raising ISO up to my practical limit. Under exposing, even at lower ISOs, results in noise and then applying NR wipes out details. My approach preserves details and lets noise fall where it may. Dave

Thanks for the info, dcstep, I wish I had read your post before shooting tonight. I'll keep it in mind for next time I'm shooting in the higher ISO range.
Here are two shots from tonight. I had to crank the ISO up to allow a faster shutter speed to capture the water detail. Pour by mkrepp, on Flickr Pour II by mkrepp, on Flickr |

Very cool shots, Matt. What did you use for a background?

Great shots Matt. Looks to me like you got the EV close to perfect. The highlights in the water are near their limits as is.

Thanks, Mark. I used a sheet of vellum paper with a 90 watt halogen spotlight behind it.
Thanks, dcstep. I just wished I could have used a lower ISO and still kept the fast shutter speed. |

great shots guys!
I played with +EV (exposing right) a couple weeks back, and the results were pretty good. I definitely need to experiment a little more with it to get it to where i would like it. The benefits of using the histogram instead of watching the light meter only are huge. |

You will be soooooo fat after that one.
Very cool. CC- a lower angle to remove the round table and just get the black background. Now to get over to a legendary bakery over here to get some pastries.
