It looks natural to me, with no color standing out more than lifelike. I've been in John Fielder's Denver gallery a lot lately and I've been quite impressed by the Saturation used by many of the photographers displaying there. (Fielder sticks close to reality, but some of the shots are over the top). The best seller, other than Fielder, is a landscape guy to grotesquely over Saturates his images. If you're every selling prints, keep in mind the potential buyers' tastes and don't get too hung up on what other photographers think, unless you don't mind low sales. Dave

Dave, I went to one of Fielder's seminars years ago (probably 20 years or so) when I was living in Denver. He has come a long way since then. I would starve if I had to depend on photographic skills (good thing I have other sources of income). I do this for the challenge and enjoyment. I have enjoyed this forum of folks who seem to be likeminded. I want to expand my skills behind the camera and the computer, but not to the point of making work out of fun…if you know what I mean. I enjoy the honest critique, encouragement and willingness to share information that I've found with this group of accomplished photogs! Last edited by IRide; 11-18-2013 at 07:40 AM.. |

Fielder works really hard for what, I suspect, is a solid six-figure income. He's supporting a large team, including rents and staff in two or three galleries. 80% of the gallery space is taken up by photographers that pay to rent wall space and a cut of the action. Fielder is out judging contests, speaking, signing books, leading outings and, oh yeah, shooting new material (gotta squeeze that in). Landscape and nature photography are extremely competitive. You need a really deep and beautiful archive, seeded with a number of truly exceptional shots to make it on your images alone. Most very talented nature photographers have other businesses, like teaching, guiding, printing, advanced digital processing, etc. If you can eek out enough to pay for your equipment as a part timer, then consider yourself very lucky. I'm not paying for my equipment yet, but I am having a good time. Dave

^^^That's a great action shot. I was just amazed to see one period. He was near the elk herd, but no way was he a match for those bulls. I guess they are making a comeback here, so hopefully I will have more opportunities.
Also we are finally getting some rain, so the marshes should be more attractive to ducks. I love this time of year. |

They, as a pack, will go after an elk calf, but we're past that time. They may also watch for the big animals to stir up rabbits and other mammals. Around here, the pack will attack a deer buck. They try to bring it down by attacking the hind quarters and disabling it. I can't imagine that with an elk. One on one is only newborns. Our duck varieties really go to almost nothing but mallards in winter, so I'm about to hit a five-month drought for most waterbirds. Of course, geese never go away. Ah, but the eagles will come in here as soon as the lakes start to freeze. Dave

Wow I've been gone a few days and missed some awesome photos in here!
Spent about a day in Boston on business, nice city for walking around. I was there in May and wasn't happy with many of my photos, and got better ones this time. This is a panorama of 2 shots combined using the shift function on my TS-E 17mm Tilt-Shift lens. Basically no camera movement is involved, only a lens movement (called shift) from left to right, taking a photo on the left end of the shift range, and one on the right end. Then combine them in Photoshop to get one larger photo. Both exposures shot with Fotodiox Wonderpana filter holder kit, 155mm CPL, and 6x8 3-stop GND. To put it in perspective, the circular polarizer filter is about the diameter of a small salad plate, and the GND filter is almost exactly the size of my iPad! Click the Flickr link under the photo to view in full screen and see the detail on the buildings and surroundings in the scene. Awesome shot, David. Boston Public Library on the left and Trinity Church over there on the right. That's a cool area. Lots of photo ops around Copley Square. Where did you stay?

You can't see it from here, but my buddy was using my 7D that I was carrying using my new Cotton Carrier harness. I wanted to be able to carry a camera on my Segway chair without it bouncing around hung from my neck (I used the 7D because I didn't wan't to try out the other bodies as guinea pigs). It actually works very well. Anyway, I rode up and down hills and all over the place at this park, and the camera was super easy to grab and use. I am going to put the 400L on it next time and see if I can use it while actively birding from the chair.

Nice, I like the perspective from the grassy area. I thought about going on the grass for some foreground but with a 17mm lens, I felt that getting closer to the building would have filled in the frame more. No day shots for me as I was in the office all day I have to say, religious or not, or whatever, that Trinity Church is a beautiful building! |
