Our neighbours are Italian, they invite us over for drinks and snacks and that's what it looks like when they put the food out. My wife is seriously competitive so when we reciprocate it's ridiculous. I just pour the drinks and be charming.

A couple of very basic ones.

Piece of advice to "read" better the message that an Italian tries to get across: also pay attention to the facial expression and the tone of the voice.

For the rest: if the hand gestures get vivid and there's a sudden language switch from English to Italian: trouble !

Maria was one of the cleaning ladies I had when I ran a facility. The company had a huge diverse mix of people, lots of Latino, lots of Africans, Germans, Russians, Chinese etc...

Whenever there was a birthday or holiday the cleaning ladies and their friends would cook dishes and we'd have a pot luck. One year they made a thanksgiving spread and the turkey was stuffed with taco meat, celery, carrots, and onions. It was the most amazing thing.

Many moons ago I was on call on Xmas eve nightshift. On Xmas day i looked tired after the night work and the dinner ladies asked me 'would you like some pudding'. I have a sweet tooth and was overjoyed. What a great start to Xmas.

Disclaimer I had just moved to Scotland and no I didn't know that black pudding wasn't a sweet dish.
