My wife is just getting into shooting pistols so I've ordered her a Ruger Target pistol 22LR for her to learn the basics on. It should be here in the next few days. I'm giving it to her for Valentines Day. Once she gets the basics down she can move up to some centre fire stuff. I miss my duty pistol so I think I"m going to get myself a Glock 22, I've still got ton's of .40cal ammunition from when I was on the job.

In 2002 we traded in some old Tommy Guns and didn’t want the money to go back into the general fund so we left it at the dealer and decided to try new guns.

I was not part of this process since I was still newish. It was decided to stay with the .40. I was already carrying a Glock 19 9mm and HK USP Compact in 357SIG off duty.

We tested:
Glock 22 gen3
HK USP Compact
S&W Sigma
Something from Walther as well.

The Glock won. So we switched over to Glock 22s.
In late 2007 we had a shooting where a lady took eight center mass rounds and was still able to reload the shotgun she was shooting at us. Upper management deemed it a caliber failure. I said it was because we were still using ancient black talon ammo and the lady was fat and had a big coat on. Soon after we had a guy rob a store and he was shot once. .40 cal round struck his temple in the front, bounced off his skull and exited. He then was able to run across five lanes of traffic, a parking lot, another five lanes of traffic and tried to hide under a van where I eventually dragged him out. He lived. Once again, upper management said caliber failure. Chief: Let’s switch to .45. I was slowly taking over the firearms stuff from the old timers. I told the chief switching to .45 would necessitate new holsters and mag pouches too. I knew .40 wasn’t a problem but I’d gotten tired of paying for my own 357 ammo so I suggested Glock 31s to the chief. He asked what research have I done on the round. I said none. FAMS and USSS use it. He said good enough. So in 2008, I switched us to Glock 31s.

In 2018, I wrote a proposal to our new chief saying I needed new mags, springs and night sights for everyone and I wrote another proposal that it wouldn’t cost much more to just get all new gen4 31s. I floated the Glock 45 as a duty weapon if we switched back to 9 but found that it won’t fit our holsters with WMLs so we decided to just get new gen4 31s. If they made a Glock 45 version in 357SIG I would’ve pushed it and gotten new holsters for those of us with WMLs. The gen5/19X/45 use a standard sized rail making the front of the gun a little taller so there are holster fitment issues with attaching a light.

I can retire in 2023 so I doubt I will be around for the next time there is a changeover.

Sorry about long paragraph. I’m tired.

We don’t put stuff out for bid. We just contact local LE distributors and ask for samples. Then once we decide, we buy. They all have set agency pricing for new guns so bidding would just slow down the process. Buy from LE dealer that’s 45 minutes away or two hours away? We chose the local one.
So this is interesting. The province of Ontario mandates .40cal for front line, the pistol is picked by the department with most opting for the Glock, some departments issue Sig or S&W. I've not heard of the .40 not being effective in a police shooting in Ontario. In fact the .40 has been very effective and of course raised the ire of the special interest groups who seemed happier when we carried .38 Semi-wad cutters which were usually not effective.

The other thing that happened when we went to the pistol from the revolver is we were getting more rounds on target in shootings. The conversion course to the semi auto's was excellent. The focus went from just hitting the target, the shooting used to be target practice with the revolver to combat style shooting. As i recall it was a 1 week course with about 1500 rounds fired. Lots of drills for stoppages, weak hand shooting, moving and shooting and engaging multiple targets. The proficiency went through the roof.

Practice, practice, practice!

You don't happen to have any .45 brass kicking around do you? I could drive over and pick up if the price was right this spring / summer.

Yeah, it's about $28 for a box of 50 up here (and that's the range discounted price for their members because they buy in bulk and pass it along to paying members).

I am a new firearm owner and was happy to find this discussion. I just bought a Beretta APX Centurion 9mm for home defense and enjoyed my first trip to the range. I've been learning a lot about safety, maintenance and technique and find that it's an interesting subject. Needless to say, I had to shoot a couple images after cleaning it up following the trip to the range.

After picking up my AK and realizing 7.62x39 was so cheap I converted my AR to use the same round. Can't beat $4 a box.

I have a ton of brass too, but it hangs between my legs and is not for sale. Unless you ask my wife.

Pretty cool, think I'll get me a M4. Wish they had a M14 also.

NJ would probably arrest you for having too short of a barrel. I know some guy was arrested in NJ for having an inert hollow-point bullet keychain.

That's fun&ed up. My wife works in government which is like the most anti gun environment, she has ear-rings that are made out of the base of 9mm cartridges, and keeps a couple of silhouette targets with some pretty respectable groupings in her office......makes some folks a bit twitchy.

I ordered my wife a Ruger 22LR target pistol for her to learn the basics, should be here for valentines day, I ordered a Glock 22 for myself. I have tons of .40 in the basement but when the glock gets here I'm going to get a conversion barrel for 9mm and maybe .357sig.

My wife wants a .357 revolver, my gun guy has a lightly used Smith 626 .357 in stainless, with factory rubber grips for $699 ($532 US), I'm thinking of grabbing it too, seems like a good deal. Am I wrong...maybe give it to her for her birthday.
