On highway patrol, how much does having out-of-state plates increase one's chances of being stopped versus someone with in-state plates doing the same stupid thing?????

It's not that significant honestly. I wouldn't worry too much about it. If you do get pulled over for any reason, however, you'll likely be cited and required to register the vehicle in the proper state.

I have only ever had one complaint. Every year, we have what is called "Rolling Thunder" along the I-85 and I-26 corridor. That is where you have all these different counties converge in our area for about two weeks in an effort to catch drug trafficking. They are quite successful I may add.

But I honestly dread it as numerous times while driving home from work..especially in my Corvette...I would have an officer come "flying" up on me out of nowhere and just tail-gate me a few miles before instantly whipping off at an exit to turn around. It's like they were waiting on me to do something wrong.

I'm the guy that's always doing the speed limit..sometimes a couple mph under....but the way they drive could be looked at as reckless driving.

Last year...I had one guy ride just a few feet off my bumper for at least 5 minutes or so....I felt like screaming get off my a$$...or pull me over.

Now most of the LE in my county know me and my car. I'm very good friends with all of them from either class, knowing my brother,..hell even the Sheriff and a few people came to my daughters wedding.

But those out of area guys are intense. Now I just find an alternate route home when this is going on.

That's an interesting approach they've taken to combat trafficking. I can't quite remember a time where I've seen allied agencies behave or enforce in that manner, but I suppose that it probably happens somewhere in my state. I'm almost certain that the officers bumper-humping you were running your plates for wants/warrants.

If I can find that image of a BIG bull dog, following a little Chihuahua, with "When a cop pulls up behind you and follows you home" It's on one of the officers' desks, I just have to remember which one.

I go over, wander the station, can't find it. I'm pretty sure it was in the detectives' suite, so I go in and ask. One turns and points at the push wall, "It's right, HEY!" So they're on it to find out what happened.

They have scored some big busts over the years. Tons of drugs, money, even some human trafficking. It lasts about 2-3 weeks and the corridors I mentioned are the bigger ones from South to North.

The Sheriff told me they are mainly looking for out of state tags...especially caravans. They do write minor infractions, but most of the time those are people just pulled so they can kind of check things out. Most of the time he said they send them on their way with a warning.

But some of the simplest stops turn into the bigger scores.

But you will see multiple LE vehicles sitting at all the exits and overpasses, and then there are the ones you don't see that are on the roads. We even have the lower part of the state send up officers for it.

In VA, a lot. It's easy money and VA has one of the most draconian speeding laws.

I seriously drive the north side of Lake Erie through Canada to avoid Ohio ever since they gave me a bogus ticket back in 1989, and avoid doing business with companies in Ohio as much as possible. There's a reason why Cincinnati Microwave (creator of the Escort radar detector) is from Ohio.....

Wisconsin is notoriously ruthless towards out-of-staters. It's between Minnesota and Illinois, two more populous and affluent states, and they treat Interstate 90/94 as a cash extraction corridor.

So its an old story, but I still am trying to figure out what I could have said in this situation that was still safe rather than looking like an idiot with a goofy grin on my face.

So I pulled onto this concession road (long, straight, few farmhouses but very little traffic) and give the car the boot just to have a little fun. About a mile or more away I see another car approaching and while I couldn't pick it out at that distance, the light signature just looked odd to me, like a potential cop, so I immediately braked and brought it down to about 10-15 km/h over the speed limit which is typically pretty safe here.

So anyways, as we get closer, I realize it is indeed a cop driving the other way and as he passes me, I'm sort of breathing a sigh of relief until I see his brake lights come on hard and pull a U turn...then I know he definitely had me on radar way back there. So I pull over, he said he had clocked me at 109 in an 80 km/h (which is true, I was well above 109 probably, I still often let the car drift up to 115 or so on this road to this day), he grabs my license and insurance, looks at it in his car, then comes back to the window.

When he comes back, he then said he was really impressed at how far away I managed to identify him (guess his radar showed when I started to brake). So I'm sitting there, wondering what to say to that. I mean, if I say thanks, I'm definitely admitting I was a very naughty person back there and richly deserving of a ticket, BUT it would also show that I'm a fairly aware driver too. So I can't remember what I wound up doing, aside from sitting there probably with a goofy grin and probably saying something dumb like "yeah".

But what would you have done if I admitted it in that circumstance, or what is safe to say?

All I remember was that he then looked at me and recognized that I would walk my dog down a nearby street that he would sometimes patrol and once we established that, we talked about the new Charger and he let me off with a warning and asked me to keep it below 100 on that stretch.

So it was all good in the end...but is it favourable to admit you saw the officer in that circumstance or you think it could be a bit of a trap?

Hadn't considered it...possibly. More likely than not though it is Scottish origin, as I grew up hearing it from my Mom's side of the family, and upon consideration, I don't think I often hear others who aren't scottish using that term.

I don't know that acknowledging your mistake is as bad as some make it seem. In many cases, owning up to a mistake is valued.......even a tad refreshing, especially since people tend to object to, and deny, any wrongdoing much of the time. I think you handled it well.

With regards to the situation that you found yourself in, the officer definitely did you a solid by not citing/arresting you for reckless driving and towing/impounding your car. Having knowledge of the area and desolate nature of that road likely factored into his decision to send you away with a warning (...and advise to top it off at 100mph). Cool cop if you ask me.
