Just posted this in another thread - but thought I would share here as well:
IMHO everyone should have a beater in the stable (ours as I've shared before is an early 2000's Mazda protege) / I love mine in fact mine just hung out at the U-Haul parking lot for the last three days without concern because we needed a van to pick up some stuff from Home Depot / my son and I returned the van and went to our beater and saw a large scratch on the bumper (I think someone backed into it) I said to my son "I don't think that was there before" he said "nope it wasn't" and we both said "oh well" got in and drove away This while our BMWs sat safely in the garage - thank you beater for taking one for the team |

Somebody hit my Eurovan the other day and didn't leave a note, and while I didn't really about the Eurovan I was pissed because of the possibility that it could've been the M3.

We have two. A 1978 Jeep Cherokee sport, and a 1999 Plymouth voyager with no rear seats, no dashboard, no headliner. My husband uses it like a pickup truck. We don’t have annual inspection where we live, so no problem.
The Jeep is my husbands daily driver. Repaired AC twice and gave up. Windows don’t work, so no ac and no windows, it is such a joy (NOT). I’ve always hated that car because it feels like I’m an egg in a beater. He also uses it to drive on the beach. Next time we go, I’ll meet him there in my X5. -edit, sorry, 1998 Jeep, not 1978. The M3 is my beater lol jk...I've had beaters in the past for winters in NE but right now I'm a single car guy for the first time in forever. But I'm hoping to add a 911 next couple years; then the m3 will definitely be the beater lol. my car has almost 80k miles and I'm hoping to add at least another 50k miles if no major issues...

135i is my ‘beater’ everyday ride. Others cars are a Lincoln MKZ and a C6 Corvette. Thankfully I’m past the stage of having just one car for everything, lifes too short. My 135i is tuned and I enjoy driving it immensely not nearly as much as the C6 though. Lincoln is nice if were need more room for passengers or luggage and it rides very smoooth.

I kind of feel the same way. Aside from the extra cost and space issues which come with having a second car, I always think will I really grab the keys to the beater when my M3 is sitting right there? Why would I want to be in some boring car instead of my fun car? Even just commuting to work in back there are still opportunities for fun

Whether it be a watch or a car, I long ago promised myself that I'd only buy them if used as intended, so I have no need for a beater car. My BMW (and Porsches before) goes into the mountains to go snowboarding, go camping, take gravel roads, get street parked, etc. I buy cars like this because I want something great to drive, whether it be 5 minutes to the grocery or an hour to Mt. Hood. |

I've thought about it since I am putting 14-15k miles a year on my M but I refuse to get a commuter as it will make everything dull. If I had stop and go traffic then I would definitely do it but my commute is full of twisties and a highway with minimal traffic with a 80 mph traffic flow

In addition if you look at what people in this thread are putting down as a beater, many are pretty nice vehicles. It's not exactly a penalty box to be driving around in a new(er) truck or 340. Although our Hyundai conforms to the traditional definition of a beater, our Jeep does not. Who wouldn't want to drive around in a 475 hp SUV on a regular basis? It's fun in a very different way than the BMW and certainly less special as well. But I have zero regrets of being in a position to operate the M3 exclusively for pleasure driving. I can say with certainty, that I sure as hell wouldn't own any M car if I lived anywhere in the 5 boroughs. Some would say that's a waste. We all make the decisions however that are best for us. |

Most of the time, I enjoy driving my 135i more than my truck, but my truck : Rides Better. Requires less effort. Fits more people. Hauls shit. Is cheaper to operate. I have a 30 mile commute. It doesn't make sense to drive a RWD turbo coupe 365 days of the year.

My current 128i is my daily. (I wouldn't call it a beater car). I don't worry about driving it everyday, and I actually look forward to getting behind the wheel of it especially as modified as I have it now.
My other car is considered my "weekend" car although I find my self driving it 1-2 times during the week when the weather is nice.

I just sold my QX4 and I'm sorry I did.
My new beater is a 2009 MDX sport. Stupid I know but I use it too much. I take it anytime there is a valet or parking garage. It will be in great shape for the next owner I need some serious help. |

Whew, I disagree. Driving a car like that makes the commute tolerable, for me. I mean, I used to drive a manual 911 in Los Angeles every day! It must be some kind of personality thing. I'd rather sit in stop and go traffic with a manual, because it gives me something to do, rather than being bored to tears, and finally getting off that highway to find even a single fun turn makes it worth it.
