OK so you're going moose hunting in Alaska. What is your sidearm? My choices are 6 inch 44 magnum revolver or Glock G 20 10mm. (Think grizzly)

.44 would be my choice. I don't think the 10mm has the same stopping power in my mind...but I haven't looked it up. Plus, it's a revolver, less chance for something to go wrong.

Yeah 44 mag is roughly double the power of the 10mm

I disagree but don't have time work through the numbers.

Will revise after doing some reading. More like 50 percent more power.

I support 50% more but it's all depending on the load. But then with the 10mm you have to consider the capacity.

The very hottest of the 10mm loads are similar to a .41 Remington magnum. 10mm from buffalo bore gets 1200ft/sec and 700 ft lbs and the same load in 44 magnum gets 1450ish and 1650ish respectively. A little bit faster but double the ft lbs, it's because the 44 mag is a 330 grain bullet while the 10mm is 220 grain (hard cast). So in the case of a bear, I'd prefer the 44 that's gonna hit like a truck but as y'all have said capacity comes up too. 10mm is fine for most North American bears though I think.

The .44 magnum. Doc you know I am a huge fan of the 10mm and it is my go to gun for things that go bump in the night but we aren't talking about shooting people.

Bears have really thick hides, and then layers of fat and muscle while they are big boned animals. You want the penetration the .44 magnum offers. The round has to get to something vital or you are just pissing it off.

Also think about how are you going to carry whatever it is you decide. Maybe go with both one on each side in a shoulder holster so they create balance. Then consider how well you shoot them each. I shoot 10mm really well but when I step up to .44 magnum or .454 Casull that stuff is a much longer trigger pull and pain in the wrist. I wouldn't want to try that in a panic situation.

just bring the 500 S&W Magnum

you’re right about panic situation , and trying to control one of these hot rounds, but if your moose hunting, and you have to defend yourself from a bear with your sidearm, lots of things have gone wrong, and he’s probably just about on you

Remember also a defensive aggressive bear is trying to scare you off don't look at it and back away. One casually walking towards you want to eat you and is the more dangerous.

I admit, I'm visualizing a bear on two legs, arms clasped behind them, whistling a tune as he walks up....and I can't take him seriously that he wants to eat me.

I've just never seen a casual bear. And your assertion of there being such made me laugh.

A buddy of mine reloads for me. He even casts his own bullets so he can dial in the best bullet weight and powder to optimize sound with my suppressors. And he likes to toss in some powder coat when he's casting. I'm shooting Skittles!

There's always the Steve McQueen/Josh Randall option
