Great bull elk shot. I need to get up to Rocky Mountain National Park for some elk shots and, with luck, moose. I usually go in late September, which, around here, is when the big bulls have claimed their harems. Maybe I should go earlier and I'll luck out and capture bulls fighting. Once the big guys have their harems they chase of the interlopers quite easily. Dave

Well if at first you don't succeed...I wasn't happy with any of my shots from yesterday, so I went back to Pt Reyes this morning and tried to see if I could do any better. It was still foggy as heck, but Elk were a wee bit closer today. I could have used a 500 for sure. Still I got some web acceptable shots. It is also just a beautiful area to be in, so it is never a bad day to go out there.
This guy was making some super loud calls. It's not quite rutting season yet, but maybe he was just practicing! 20130728-AQ4E0451 by lennycarl08, on Flickr |

Thanks Weebl!
These shots are tough to process. The software can't tell the difference between mist from the fog and actual noise so it tends to over-smooth everything out if you let it, so the results tend to be a bit grainy. I think I am going to head south next weekend to the tule elk reserve down by Los Banos. It will be the opposite of cold and foggy there |

59 degrees for the race in SF and 75 at home. I looked kind of stupid in Safeway with a turtle neck on.

Nice shot, Ed. What was the distance there?
Quote:
Today was also nice and I went down to the local reservoir this afternoon with my two big guns looking for birds. Aside from one GBH way off in the distance, I saw nothing. The only shot of the day worth saving at all was this shot of the spillway taken with the M and 22mm.

Thanks Mark, probably about 400 feet or so away up a hill.
Yeah, I was flip flopping in my head all last night weather I wanted to head out there again today, but I just wasn't happy with Saturdays effort, so I went for it, and I am glad I did. I also saw some deer out, munching the grass on a dairy farm on the way back. 20130728-AQ4E0735 by lennycarl08, on Flickr |

Soooo ... it rained a little bit during the races this weekend...
Racing in the Rain by ddk632, on Flickr On a side note, both of my cameras got soaked. The Rebel XTi is built like a tank. The 6D ... not so much. Started behaving erratically and I eventually retired it early to the trunk of my vehicle to dry off and will see in a day or two if it's back to normal or needs service. It kept on shooting just fine, but I was not able to review images, change settings including shutter speed, etc. I think water got into the back dial and the live view button area. Trying to review images started to turn on live view instead! The XTi never flinched. |

Cool shot, David. I'm amazed the bikes could even stay upright with that much water on the track. I hope your 6D recovers.

Great shot David.
Even the 1D series needs a raincoat in rain like that. Noted bird photographer Art Morris crapped out two 1D4s in a morning of shooting without protection. Dave

Thanks guys -- been processing a bunch more this evening, it was definitely worth it. I was thinking "if my 6D dies I will trade it (and a lung or two) in for a 1DX!"
Some rain gear is probably a smarter option though |

Nice shot, Ed. Might be a good candidate for a cinematic (2.35:1) crop with some black border top and bottom.
