Not contemporary enough for my taste.

2009 M3  [8.40]
Yesterday morning I was about to head back to the house when I saw a large group of American white pelicans preening and sleeping in a huge clump. I pulled the ole M3 shooting blind into position to shoot when this handsome guy plunked down right in front of me to fish (alas he caught nothing):

Great blue heron landing. by dcstep, on Flickr

Canon 7D, 1/4000th second, 500mm lens at f/4 and ISO 800 (it was very overcast, but if I'd had time to react I would have stopped down one full f-stop).

This demonstrates that nature photog should consider staying out when it's overcast. If you can get a close crop you can use +EV capture details that are hard to get in full sun. This setting is +1EV using AV mode.

This image would have been much harder in full sun because the sun is to his back and right shoulder. The contrast would have been huge and getting shadow detail on his underside (the real point of interest here) would have been hard. Also, believe it or not, the greys in the full sun would have risked blow out. This light is actually easier to work with than most think.

sorry, but this is a pet peeve of mine... nothing can be "very unique". It's either unique, or not. There are no grades of uniqueness.

haha, fine.....

That's a unique shot Dave.

It just doesn't sound as nice as saying "very" cause you could take "unique" as a bad thing, and i think adding "very" in front of it, makes it a good thing.

But i see your point.

I just see it as one is complimentary and the other is a statement.

So not to open the wrong can of worms or anything, but what is the fascination with bird shots Dave? I'm not knocking it or anything, I'm just curious what makes people do it and follow them so religiously. I don't really understand it all.

Just like BMW's, except for birds.

A big part of it is where a person lives in my opinion.

If Udub were to go hang out in Colorado and be taken to all the national parks and stuff, I guarantee he would start wanting to shoot wildlife, there's just so much of it there.

Larger than I normally post, but I'm too lazy at the moment to resize.....didn't sleep at all night and just got back from the airport (I actually just posted this in the night photography thread by accident...lol). I was going mostly for a silhouette-ish shot w/ the pouring in of light thru the bar windows. Does it work?
