During the period 1926 to 1933, Mercedes-Benz produced a series of supercharged straight sixes that achieved excellent results in racing, as well as proving popular for street use.
The first engines were 6800cc and put out 180 hp. Subsequent engines were enlarged to 7065cc, and output rose to 200, then 250 and finally 300 hp. Some earlier cars were modified for greater power. Models included the Model S, then the SS, the SSK and finally the lightened SSKL. Surviving cars are worth millions today.

Proof that not all Ferraris are beautiful. This Ghia-bodied 1956 410SA Super America was doubtless considered extremely desirable in its time, but I would call it homely... Later (1958-59) 410SAs were prettier.

This one goes waaay back... The 1901 Knox Model A as you can see had tiller steering. It was powered by a one-liter single-cylinder engine of 10 horsepower and could achieve a max speed of 35 miles per hour. Knox built 100 Model As in 1901 and the price was $750.

On the other hand, Pinin Farina (later the company name became Pininfarina) had the touch even in this era of excess. His early 410SAs were winners. Here's a couple of shots of another '56 but by PF. No matter the coachbuilder, the 410SAs all had a mighty 4.95-liter Lampredi-designed V-12 of 340 horsepower (late cars had 360 hp) The price of a Super America? If you had to ask, you probably could not afford it, but about the equivalent of US$17,000 is mentioned. Buyers could specify any number of details about their cars and I suppose any order would involve a number of trips to Italy during the design and production process, Very few 410 Super Americas were built: 14 in 1956 (series I), 6 in 1957 (series II) and 12 in 1958-59 (series III) for a total of 32.

The 1915 Pierce-Arrow Model 38-C Landualet had the chauffeur out in the elements while the passengers could shelter inside or drop the top.

Marmon cars were built in Indianapolis and every Sixteen, with its V-16 engine of 200 hp, was said to have been tested on the speedway. Many of these cars were bodied by LeBaron.
