I got a chance recently (spur of the moment decision that cost me a pretty penny) to play Eichenried, just a couple days after the BMW Open so it was still in tournament conditions - even had the bleachers up and all the advertising signs / walls / etc around the tee boxes.

https://www.gc-eichenried.de/

Got absolutely eaten alive by mosquitos, lost 3 balls in rough that was barely off the fairway and my whole group saw where they landed, but drained some long putts and finished with a 92.

Looks like a beautiful course! I don't think I would be able to concentrate with all of the mosquitos. I tend to get bit up quite a bit and it drives me nuts.

Sounds like you played pretty well! Congrats!

Update on this. Play at Hickory Sticks in KY..right on the Ohio river. The course is very hilly and narrow and freakin challenging. I lost a few balls but I was also trying new things to help improve my game. Was a fun course!

We will see how I do tonight for my companies golf league!

Played the best* public course in the region. Golf score was…unmentionable. Course condition, weather, scenery, food and enjoyment were a 12 on a scale from 0 to 10. I took a sorely needed mental health day and a half off from work. A typical round for me includes 6 brilliant shots, not all on the same hole, combined with the “other shots”. It’s enough to keep me playing the game!

* my personal experience and ratings from several noteworthy reviewers.

Hey guys. Just found this thread, sweet! I’m a golf nut, even though I suck and it’s rare I break 90. I haven’t played since 6/25/23 due 2 different health reasons, but yesterday in my PT I started working on my swing again! I’m shooting for first round in October or November. I have a group (8) of old college buddies that I get together with every year on a fellas golf trip. Obviously I missed this year’s trip, but because I missed it, I get to pick the destination for 2025. We usually play 3 courses over 3 days, somewhere in continental US, and usually in May. I’m looking for ideas for where to go. Any suggestions?

Grips

Is there a “best” grip for irons and woods these days?

I have 30 year old corded grips on the irons. They still get the job done but need to be replaced. My driver and 3w are Nike SQ and have 15 yr old factory grips.

I think I prefer corded, but want to hear what the experts here have to say. Thanks for any comments.

Welcome to the thread! lol!

I see that you are in AZ..I have seen lots a great courses there and was going to suggest AZ. How far do you and your buddies travel to?

I know Michigan has some really nice courses.

Not sure to be honest. I still have my original grips on my irons from when I bought them in 2001. Still feel good. I just need to get the club heads cleaned up. Might use coca cola for that as I have heard that brings the clubs back to brand new.

I know my work league golf teammate takes his to Dicks Sporting Goods and has had good success with them but as far as getting corded grips reinstalled...I am not sure. Maybe do an internet search on golf shops and start calling and seeing if they can or not.

Grips are mostly preference. Golf Pride Tour Velvet is probably considered the gold standard, but many (like myself) like Golf Pride’s MCC series of hybrid (material) grips. Of course, you might like the firmer feel and sweat resistance of a fully corded grip.

Totally a personal preference, I would go to your local golf shop and ‘feel’ different grips.

I personally like Golf Pride MCC Plus 4 midsize grips.

Thanks for the comments. My local golf mecca shop has full corded grips available. Thinking of dropping the irons off in November for a re-grip. 1-PW. Love the knife btw.

Thank you for chiming in! Yes, tons of good AZ courses, you're right. The thing is, even longer than we have been doing this trip, (since 1999), a few of the guys (different every year) would come out for spring training each year, and we have hit just about every course that could be hit in the mornings before taking in a game in the afternoon... AZ is definitely out. We really don't care where in the US we go. Our group is spread from SoCal to West Virginia, so everybody travels. One other thing I should mention is that it needs to be a public course with easy access. I'd love to put Augusta on the list, but unfortunately none of the guys are members... Hey! Anybody reading this a member at Augusta that would like to sponsor a group of mostly decent golfers who are acutely aware of their own actions? If so, please PM me. You'd be my hero!

Haha, yeah I know. I saw that when I sent over the link. But there are 99 others to look at.

I would try Michigan. Florida. Utah, Montana. I love playing on very hilly courses with lots of over looks from the tee box to the green.

Michigan and Montana sound like viable options! Thanks!

Not in the US, but have you considered Canada - northern Ontario?

Muskoka Bay Resort http://www.muskokabayresort.com/golf is great, and there are a number of courses within a short drive. Like Taboo http://www.taboomuskoka.com/muskoka-...a-golf-course/.

Or you can go a bit further north and hit Lake Joseph Golf Club, Rocky Crest Golf Club and The Rock…there are a number of others.

Could also consider Blue Mountain https://www.bluemountain.ca/things-t.../monterra-golf nice area with lots to do and a few other courses within a short drive.

The exchange rate works in your favour too.

My wife and I were considering a golf trip to Gaylord, Michigan area this fall, but decided to play a few courses in Norther Ontario that we have not played instead, due to the crappy exchange rate for us to travel to the US right now.

Hi, I’m new to this thread as well.

My “Frat Crew” has played several places in the US. My favorites:
Wolf Creek in Mesquite, NV is a ton of fun.
Played Whistling Straits - not so difficult from the mere mortal white tees. Probably too cold in late Oct into Nov.
Played Pebble Beach - nice, but $$$$$.
World Woods, north of Tampa

Good luck!

Hello, and thanks for the rec's! We had considered doing something up North, but Ontario was not on our list. It is now! Those look like beautiful courses. The exchange rate certainly doesn't hurt, either. I wish my wife played, would make planning vacations much easier! Thanks again!

We have Wolf Creek on the list. One of the guys has played it, and Pebble as well. Both solid destinations. Will take a look at World Woods. Thank you for the reply!

Any opinions on Golf Pride Z-grip corded vs Velvet corded grips?

Z-grip has molded grooves in addition to cords. Velvet looks like traditional corded grips.

Does anyone use a Sunday bag? Mainly for par 3 9-hole courses.

I want to get more golf in and a quick 9 holes is what my schedule can manage. Is a Sunday bag worth having another piece of stuff? Or is a hand cart at the course with a full size bag equally useful?

Just an FYI, I believe that World Woods has changed hands, so it has been quite awhile since I've played it.

One of my friends says that he has recently played TPC Sawgrass was as nice as Pebble and worth the price ($$$$$).
