Yeah, same here; 28 years and 4 months now. I count 'em up every once in a while.

is there anyone here that absolutely dislikes their job but knows it pays well so they continue doing it...? i've worked in the corporate world for 12 years but despise it so much that I would gladly take a 50% cut tomorrow if I could work for myself 40 hrs a week w healthcare benefits...

I have a law degree from a T30 law school, never worked as an attorney and if I could redo it again, would never go to law school. I ended up in contracts management. The funny thing is I make more than most practicing attorneys (save for big law and corporate in house counsel). Is my degree useful in my trade? Maybe a little. On the job experience is much more useful than education for contracts management. Regardless, I don't like my job just in it to make money and retire by 55.

Curious, what does everyone do for work?
I'm in a pretty weird situation right now, and it made me curious about what folks in this community do for work/career? Let's hear it!

I am a National Account Manager for the US' largest security contractor. We are the US' third largest employer with over 800k employees. We recently bought another company and now have a global presence.
My client is a large DoD contractor. We have over 60 locations we service. My role is mostly contract compliance and managing the client relationship. I ensure the collaboration between our local branch offices and the local client managers, and ensure they stay within the contract and meet metrics to provide a high level of service. The forum search tool apparently does not index the OT section. You can try searching for it in Google, using "site: www.bimmerpost.com" as an additional search term and see what pops up.
If you think that your employment situation is weird, I am relegated to sitting on the couch watching Oprah and eating Bon-Bons after a 38-year career chasing Nigerian princes.....

I am the only remaining manufacturer's hardware SME for a telecom switching system that is almost at end of life, but not quite. This effectively means that they pay me to simply not retire until all the existing equipment is removed from The Telephone Company.
I work 0-8 hours a week, from home, but need to answer any request 24 hours a day, when called upon. I can work from anywhere, as long as I have my laptop and cellphone. In practice, I watch Oprah and eat Bon-Bons.

I'm an IT manager for a fortune 200 company. Been with the company for 42 years in a number of roles. Actually like my job. I could have retired years ago, but work from home, get plenty of vacation, and make good money. What the heck !!

I worked in IT/networking for the same employer for almost 39 years, and was involuntarily retired with a small severance package last month because business isn't looking good in their field.
Entering week #4 of retirement, I *lost* two pounds from eating Bon-Bons and binge-watching old "CHiPs" episodes. Up to season five now. Seriously though, I'm so fscking bored now that I'll have to look for another job before I die from boredom.....

Amateur gynecologist, a great pursuit in retirement. =8)
Retired at 59 (now 67 on 7/31), after splitting my career between air freight for 7 years when I was young, ops mgr for a POS reseller for 13 years (way ahead of our time - we were automating small retail stores from '84 with an IBM PC-based with a multiuser/multitasking proprietary OS), then flipped to sales in my late 30's and worked for tech mfr's and a couple of huge distributors. Not a bad career for a guy who failed to graduate from HS, went to JC for 3 months before dropping out at 18 and starting to work full time to support myself. Wife is only 52 and a senior VP in IT for the second largest bank in the country, works from home, brings home a LOT of bacon, allowing me to retire early. We live out in the sticks where cost of living is cheap, crime is low, the weather is great, and life is good. I'm really fortunate.
