looking for a new camera what do you guys recommend

that's kind of vague, but regardless of the type of camera you like, you can't go wrong with Canon, Nikon or Olympus.

What type of photography are you gonna be doing? Fast moving? Still? Daytime? Night time?

I agree with the above post. You can't go wrong with any camera but of course you'll eventually end up with one of them and you'll stick to it.

I say spend less on the body and more on the lens. The lens you can keep forever, the body, you'll end up upgrading every couple of years or so.

Night time = low noise sensor and lenses that work well in low light. You'll probably want a tripod, too.

If that's the case, you want a camera that has a very high ISO and a fast lens. Something you won't find at a starter camera.

I'm a Nikon user so I would say D7000 as your first camera since it has a very low noise in higher ISO. And you would probably be shooting indoors as well. So D7000 is an all around camera that won't hurt your wallet.

As far as the lens go, you should probably go for 17-55 f/2.8 unless you want something wider. Since you will be shooting at smaller aperture 12-24 f/4 is a good lens. No need to get a faster lens since you will be on a tripod and will have long exposure and shooting at f/8+.

If you're shooting indoors or concerts f/2.8 or bigger is better. Nothing smaller.

Since you are beginning why don't you just get a used camera body from Craigslist. I would suggest a D70 or D90, both of which are easily available for under a grand. For the lens a great prime lens like the Nikkor 50mm F1.8 will give you excellent picture quality and is super fast for low lighting situations. You can pick up a new one for less than $150.

Got my wife the Canon Rebel T2i and an EFS 55-250mm f/4-5.6 IS lense. We are pleased so far. You can always go bigger/better but it gets quite expensive. We're not professional photographers though

My only concern with recommending the D7000 is whether or not you'd be expecting a set of automatic shooting modes, similar to what you find on point and shoots (e.g. landscape, nighttime, sport/high speed, etc.).

Are you familiar with shooting in Aperture/Shutter Priority and/or Manual modes, and if not - are you planning on learning that, or do you want something more basic?

Since you want to take night city shots, buy either one of these lenses:

12-24mm or 16-35mm.

Hey man, I dont mean to hijack the thread at all but I am selling my 50D in a kit. The kit comes with a an 18-55 ef-s lens, Lowerpro backpack, Canon 420ex flash, a filter for the flash, a 4gb CF card, lcd protector, oem battery, all original box/materials, and ofcourse the 50D body.

I used to be a Nikon user, still has a D200 with 18-200 and a fisheye. Then I bought a Canon T2i to try and never look back. The night shots are incredible and the noise is acceptable. The only draw back on the T2i is its size. It feels a bit too small and light to me. So I went and bought a 60D with the 15-85 lens. You should able to buy the 60D with the 15-85 for under $1700.

60D felt too plasticy for me. The magnesium alloy bodys feel solid.

I found the 60D feels as good as my D200 with the Magnesium body.
